Lourdes Competes at NAIA National Duals for First Time

Baker Box Score
Missouri Valley Box Score
Brewton-Parker Box Score

Lourdes was invited to the NWCA/NAIA National Duals inside the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville, Ky. for the first time in program history, but dropped matches to sixth-ranked Baker and 16th-ranked Missouri Valley before finishing with a victory over Brewton-Parker on Friday.

"This tournament is as tough as it was advertised to be," head coach Dock Kelly III said afterwards.  "We allowed several opportunities to elude us today, and that is very disappointing.  We have to learn from the adversity that we experienced today in order to achieve our remaining goals for the season."

The 18th-ranked Gray Wolves suffered a 35-14 decision against Baker in the opening round before dropping a heart-breaking 24-23 consolation round match to Missouri Valley in a contest that was decided via criteria, with the Vikings winning 39-38 on total points.  Lourdes concluded the tournament with a 28-12 win over Brewton-Parker.

Lourdes fell behind 7-0 to Baker after two bouts before Nick Henneman (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.) scored a 9-0 major decision at 141 pounds to put the Gray Wolves on the scoreboard.  Trailing 13-4 heading into 157 pounds, Garret Anderson (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.) won via fall at the 3:56 mark midway in the second period.

Greg Briggs (Seville, Ohio/Cleverleaf H.S.) put the Gray Wolves in front momentarily, 14-13, with a 14-4 major decision at 165 pound before the Wildcats responded with three straight pins and a major decision to close out the match.

The Gray Wolves started fast against Missouri Valley in the consolation round.  Ray Porter (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville H.S.) posted a 4-0 victory at 125 pounds before Jimmy Balazy (Parma, Ohio/Padua Franciscan H.S.) followed with a pin just 1:40 into the first period in his 133-pound match.

Henneman earned his second victory of the day with a 16-0 technical fall to increase the lead to 14-0.  The Vikings responded with wins in the next four bouts to take a 17-14 lead before Isaac Ingram (Lima, Ohio/Bath H.S.) scored a fall in the second period at 184 pounds.

Missouri Valley answered with a fall at 197 to take a three-point lead before Alec Moore-Nash (Price Hills, Ohio/Elder H.S.) closed the contest with an 8-7 decision at 285 pounds to even the score at 23-23.  The Vikings were awarded the winning point via the third criterion, total bout points, scoring one more than the Gray Wolves.

Lourdes had to rally in the final match of the day against Brewton-Parker.  The Barons opened with three decisions in the first four bouts with only Henneman being awarded a forfeit at 141 pounds for Lourdes early points.  Anderson recorded his second fall of the day 21 seconds into the second period to put the Gray Wolves in front 12-9 at the midway point.

Briggs earned his second victory of the day with a 4-2 decision at 165 before the Barons answered with a win at 174.  Ingram posted an 11-1 major decision for his second triumph of the tournament before Nick Caruso (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville H.S.) picked up a forfeit win at 197.  Moore-Nash closed the match with a 10-5 decision at the heavyweight spot.

"It was great to finish on a winning note," Kelly added.  "It is imperative that we get mentally and physically prepared for the Missouri Valley Invitational next weekend."

Lourdes (9-6) will head to Marshall, Mo. next Friday and Saturday to compete in the Missouri Valley Invitational.  Action begins at 3 p.m. EST on Friday inside the Burns Athletic Complex.
