Lourdes saw its school-record 11-game winning streak come to an end on Saturday afternoon, as the Gray Wolves suffered a 73-66 defeat to Rochester (Mich.) inside of Garth Pleasant Arena in Rochester Hills, Mich.
Â
The Gray Wolves remain in first place in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference, one-half game ahead of Indiana Tech.
Â
"We played okay today, but we need to be more aggressive to balls," head coach
Dennis Hopson said afterwards. "They were the tougher team today."
Â
The Gray Wolves committed 14 turnovers on the day, leading to 15 Rochester points, while the Warriors committed just six miscues over the 40 minutes. Lourdes shot 45.6% from the floor compared with Rochester's 41.9% clip.
Â
A 15-4 run by Lourdes midway through the first half put the Gray Wolves on top 25-15 following a three-pointer by
Mike Bruce (Ypsilanti, Mich./Ypsilanti H.S.) with 7:55 to play before halftime. The Warriors responded with a 12-2 run of their own, pulling even at the 3:30 mark before Lourdes retook a 32-29 lead heading into the locker room.
Â
Lourdes came out the second half and rebuilt a nine-point edge, 42-33, just over four minutes into the stanza following a free throw by
Nick Welch (Temperance, Mich./Saint Mary Catholic Central H.S.). Again the Warriors answered, this time with a 13-2 run to pull in front at the 12:12 mark.
Â
The Gray Wolves answered, moving back on top 60-57 with just over five minutes to play after a three-pointer by
Clif Snow (Middletown, Ohio/Middletown H.S.). That would be Lourdes last lead, as Rochester scored the next eight points to pull in front for good.
Â
A Bruce jumper with 1:30 to play made it 68-66, but the Gray Wolves were unable to score the rest of the way as Rochester made free throws down the stretch.
Â
Snow led Lourdes with 20 points and eight rebounds while Welch added 13 points. Bruce also tallied double figures with 12 points on the day.
Â
Andrew Kline led Rochester (13-5, 6-3 WHAC) with 17 points while Armand Cartwright and Peter Agba added 16 points each.
Â
Lourdes (14-4, 8-2) will look to return to the win column on Wednesday evening as the Gray Wolves travel to Southfield, Mich. to face Lawrence Tech. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. inside of Ridler Field House.
