Lourdes struck first on Saturday afternoon at O'Laughlin Stadium in Adrian, Mich. but Siena Heights responded with two first half goals of their own and defeated the Gray Wolves 2-1.
Â
"We really struggle the first half," head coach
Matt Johnson said afterwards. "We didn't control the game very well and were not very sharp. It seemed as if we were a step behind and they looked hungry."
Â
The Gray Wolves did strike first, scoring off a corner kick just 5:10 into the match.Â
Andris Klempert (Hamburg, Germany/Stadtteilschule Walddorfer H.S.) sent the corner into the box where
Brendon Long (Cave Creek, Ariz./Cactus Shadows H.S.) got his head on the ball and found the back of the net for his team-leading fourth goal of the season.Â
Â
Siena Heights (1-1, 1-1 WHAC) responded five minutes later as Gustavo Barros curved a free kick around the Lourdes wall from 20 yards out to tie the match at one.
Â
The Saints scored what proved to be the match-winner at the 29:28 mark of the first half. Uthman Babatunde flicked a header into the box over the Gray Wolf defense and Remy Collard ran onto the ball and scored from inside the box.
Â
After being outshot 7-6 in the opening half, Lourdes rebounded in the second 45 minutes and finished with a 16-14 shot advantage for the match but was unable to find the equalizer. Andrew Kozan made six saves in net for the Saints while
Ali Chokr (Bint Jbail, Lebanon/Fontainebleau [La.] H.S.) tallied six stops of his own for the Gray Wolves, playing the first 72 minutes of the contest.
Â
The Gray Wolves held a 7-1 edge in corner kick opportunities as well, converting on one for their lone tally.
Â
Lourdes (3-2, 1-1) will return home on Tuesday evening to host Olivet Nazarene in their final non-conference action of the fall. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Wildcat Stadium.
