Lourdes Falls One Goal Short in Shootout at Lawrence Tech

In a high-scoring affair on Saturday evening, Lawrence Tech tallied the final goal of the match with just under 15 minutes remaining to defeat Lourdes 4-3 at Blue Devils Stadium in Southfield, Mich.

Lourdes battled back from a two-goal first half deficit to tie the match at intermission and rallied again after trailing in the second half but was unable to ever forge in front itself.

"I think we came out a little flat and their pressure caught us off guard," head coach Matt Johnson said after the match.  "We showed good character to battle back and tie the match.  We need to become a team that wins these games though and we aren't quite there yet."

Aleksander Spirovski put Lawrence Tech (3-1, 2-0 WHAC) on top less than seven minutes into the match and Alvaro Merino added another goal at the 23:06 mark to give the hosts a 2-0 lead with Juan Jaramillo drawing assists on both tallies.

With 10:25 to play before intermission, Amin Elbashir (London, England/The Crest Boys Academy) scored his first career goal as a Gray Wolf from 30 yards out following Savio Adams' fourth assist of the season.  Less than two minutes later, Farouk Amoo (South Holland, Ill./Thornwood H.S.) found the back of the net following a header across from Brendon Long (Cave Creek, Ariz./Cactus Shadows H.S.), evening the match at two.

Lourdes had a chance to take the lead with less than two minutes to play before halftime, but Adams' penalty kick attempt was stopped on a diving save by Riley Alexander.

Jaramillo capitalized on a penalty kick of his own 3:39 into the second half to put the Blue Devils back on top.

Again, the Gray Wolves responded as Adams found Anthony Samuel (Chaguanas, Trinidad & Tobago/Chaguanas H.S.) from a corner kick who scored on a flick volley for his first goal at Lourdes with just under 30 minutes remaining.

The match remained tied at three when Jaramillo scored the match-winning goal with less than 15 minutes remaining.

Despite Lourdes outshooting the Blue Devils 19-11 for the match, including 12-6 over the final 45 minutes, the Gray Wolves were unable to find the equalizer one final time.  Ali Chokr (Bint Jbail, Lebanon/Fontainebleau [La.] H.S.) made two saves in net for the Gray Wolves while Alexander made four stops for Lawrence Tech.

Lourdes (3-4, 1-2) will close out the road portion of its fall schedule next Saturday, Oct. 24, as the Gray Wolves travel to Concordia (Mich.).  Kickoff is set for 11 a.m. at Cardinal Stadium.
