Lourdes scored early and late on Saturday afternoon, as the Gray Wolves defeated Concordia (Mich.) 2-1 at Cardinals Stadium in Ann Arbor, Mich. to complete the fall sweep of the Cardinals.
Â
"This was big win for us to get us back to .500 in league play," head coach
Matt Johnson said afterwards. "I thought we came out with really good energy and took hold of the game earlier. We controlled the game well in the second half even though it took us a long time to score. It was a good performance."
Â
With the match deadlocked at one, Lourdes had a free kick from about 30 yards out that went into the box.Â
Robert Pereznegron (Channelview, Texas/Channelview H.S.) gathered and sent the ball across the goal mouth, where it deflected off a Cardinals defender into the back of the net for the match-winner with just 2:38 remaining on the clock. For Pereznegron, it was his second goal of the season and the junior's first career match-winner.
Â
Lourdes jumped in front early as
Andris Klempert (Hamburg, Germany/Stadtteilschule Walddorfer H.S.) sent a free kick into the penalty area where
Brendon Long (Cave Creek, Ariz./Cactus Shadows H.S.) gathered and fired it into the net for his team-leading fifth goal of the year. Klempert's assist was his third of the year.
Â
Concordia (2-3, 2-2 WHAC) answered with 21:49 to play before halftime as Austin Corona's cross found the foot of Brett Kuhlman who finished to even the match.
Â
Despite both teams having several chances, neither found the back of the net until Pereznegron's winning tally.
Â
Lourdes finished the match with a 16-5 shot advantage, including 7-2 after the break.Â
Ali Chokr (Bint Jbail, Lebanon/Fontainebleau [La.] H.S.) made three saves for the Gray Wolves while Ryan Webb had four stops for the Cardinals. Lourdes also had all seven of the corner kick opportunities in the match.
Â
Lourdes (4-4, 2-2) will close out the fall portion of its schedule next Saturday as the Gray Wolves host Rochester (Mich.). Kickoff for the Halloween affair is set for 3 p.m. at Wildcat Stadium.
