Two goals less than six minutes apart in the second half turned a one-goal deficit into a one-goal lead for Lourdes on Saturday afternoon, and the Gray Wolves held on to defeat Rochester (Mich.) 2-1 at Wildcat Stadium.
Â
After a defensive opening half in which both teams managed just three shot attempts, play opened up in the final 45 minutes.
Â
Just over five minutes out of the break, Adrian Lopez found Evan Mitchell across the box and Mitchell headed home the first goal of the match for the Warriors.
Â
Lourdes responded just over three minutes later.Â
Kevin Gonzalez (Pasadena, Texas/South Houston H.S.) found
Anthony Samuel (Chaguanas, Trinidad & Tobago/Chaguanas H.S.) who fired a blast from 25 yards out into the top left corner of the net to even the match at one.
Â
With 30:29 to play, the roles reversed. Samuel found Gonzalez who headed home what turned out to be the match-winner following a cross. The goal was Gonzalez's first of his career following his first career assist six minutes earlier.
Â
Rochester (0-4, 0-4 WHAC) outshot Lourdes 14-12 for the match but
Ali Chokr (Bint Jbail, Lebanon/Fontainebleau [La.] H.S.) made five saves in goal to earn the win. Chris Sayles made four stops for the Warriors. Rochester had a 9-6 corner kick advantage in the match as well, with all nine opportunities coming in the final 45 minutes.
Â
Lourdes (5-4, 3-2) will take the winter months off before resuming play for the second half of the season in the spring.
