Three different players found the back of the net for Lourdes on Saturday evening as the Gray Wolves opened Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play with a 3-0 shutout over Cornerstone at Wildcat Stadium.
Â
The clean sheet was the second consecutive for the Gray Wolves, as Lourdes notched back-to-back shutouts for the first time since the 2017 season.
Â
"This was a great start to the conference season," head coach
Matt Johnson said afterwards. "It was nice to see a couple of different guys get on the scoresheet."
Â
Lourdes jumped out to a quick lead just under 10 minutes into the match.Â
Savio Adams (Cape Town, South Africa/Zeekoevlei H.S.) sent a long lead bass up the middle which was collected by
Farouk Amoo (South Holland, Ill./Thornwood H.S.). Amoo went one-on-one with goalkeeper Alan Mendoza before moving past him for his first goal of the year.
Â
The Gray Wolves doubled their lead just 1:40 before halftime.Â
Robert Pereznegron (Channelview, Texas/Channelview H.S.) rifled a shot from 20 yards out at the top of the box into the back of the net. The goal was the first of his career for the junior defender.
Â
Adams added an insurance goal of his own with just under 20 minutes to play in the match. He sent a blast from the top of the goal box into the netting after receiving a feed from his right from
N'Faly Diallo (Detroit, Mich./Mumford H.S.).
Â
The Gray Wolves outshot the Golden Eagles 12-8 for the match, including an 8-1 edge on goal. Mendoza made five stops in net for Cornerstone (0-1, 0-1 WHAC) while
Ali Chokr (Bint Jbail, Lebanon/Fontainebleau [La.] H.S.) needed to make just one save for the shutout for Lourdes. Chokr's clean sheet was the sixth of his career, tying
Jose Cedillo's career record at Lourdes.
Â
Lourdes (3-1, 1-0) will return to the road next Saturday afternoon as the Gray Wolves travel to Adrian, Mich. to battle Siena Heights. Kickoff is set for noon at O'Laughlin Stadium.
