Lourdes University has announced that its suspension of athletic competition will continue through the remainder of the fall semester.
Due to the increase in COVID-19 positive cases and the large number of students currently in quarantine, Lourdes University suspended competitions on November 6. The increased cases continuing throughout the state as well as in Northwest Ohio, as well as the upcoming holidays have prompted the additional time for the suspension of events. These measures are taking place for the safety and well-being of the student-athletes, the Lourdes community as a whole, as well as the surrounding areas.
The increase in the length of the suspension of competitions affects men's and women's basketball, and men's and women's wrestling, all of whom had games during the time period.
"With the continued increase in positive cases throughout Ohio, along with wanting consistency for our student-athletes, this is what is best for Lourdes University at this time," athletics director Janet Eaton said. "This will prevent our teams from potentially starting and stopping again and will allow our student-athletes to fully focus on final exams as the end of the semester nears. While it is not what we had hoped for, it will give us the best opportunity to move forward in January.
The Gray Wolves will now look to resume competition January 2 when men's basketball is slated to host Miami-Middletown. WHAC play for men's and women's basketball will begin January 6 as the Gray Wolves host Rochester (Mich.). Men's and women's wrestling will begin on January 8 with the men competing in a tri-match at Marian while the women head to Campbellsville for a dual meet to begin their inaugural season.
Lourdes will work with the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference for basketball and the Mid-South Conference for women's wrestling regarding rescheduling of league games affected during this time frame with make-up dates to be announced at a future time.
