SYLVANIA, Ohio – The Lourdes winter athletic programs have won 25 NAIA Winter Scholar-Athlete awards, the NAIA announced Tuesday morning.
About one-third of Lourdes' recipients came from one team; women's basketball. Eight players on the women's basketball team were selected: Ashley Zawisza, Camryn Ivy, Carly Maple, Grace Ryan, Kambry Edwards, Karsyn Edwards, Oliwia Dyja, and Tamyah Worthy.
Competitive cheer had the next most student-athletes win the prestigious award with six. Competitive dance had over half their team get selected with five student-athletes. Men's and women's bowling each had two recipients. Finally, men's basketball and women's wrestling each had one recipient selected.
The criteria to be nominated for the scholar-athlete title includes being on the team of your current institution for the prior year and having over a 3.50 GPA. Therefore, younger teams with lots of freshman had less opportunities for players to be selected.
Even with lots of underclassman on many of the Gray Wolves winter sports teams, Lourdes' 25 student-athletes selected is nearly double the national average of 13 per team.
