Upcoming in Gray Wolves Volleyball: Lourdes returns to Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play for the first time in nearly three weeks. Â The Gray Wolves host Goshen on Wednesday evening before traveling to ninth-ranked Aquinas for a Friday evening contest.
On the Air: Wednesday's game against Goshen will be broadcast live on BCSN as part of Buckeye Broadband. Â The game will also air on Thursday 9:30 a.m. and Friday at 4:30 p.m. In addition, BCSN2 will show the game Thursday at 3:30 a.m. and 11:30 p.m., Friday at 1:30 p.m., and Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
Head Coach Greg Reitz: In his ninth season both on the Lourdes bench, and overall coaching men's volleyball,
Greg Reitz has a 170-65 (.723) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves. Â He has earned six conference Coach of the Year honors during his first eight seasons at Lourdes, including the first WHAC Coach of the Year last year. Â He is the only head coach in program history.
Series Notes: Lourdes is 2-0 against Goshen in a series that began Jan. 22, 2019. Â The Gray Wolves swept the Maple Leafs in Goshen, Ind. in the first meeting before registering the same outcome in the Ebeid Rec Center less than two months later. Â Lourdes is 3-1 all-time against Aquinas in a series that began last season on March 1, 2019. Â The Gray Wolves won in four sets at home and swept the Saints in Grand Rapids, Mich. during the regular season. Â Lourdes then swept Aquinas in the WHAC championship before the Saints won in three sets at the NAIA National Championship.
Wrapping Up Last Week: The Gray Wolves tallied a three-set win at seventh-ranked Saint Xavier on Thursday night. Â
Evan Gebert put down 13 kills. Â Lourdes began Friday with a sweep of Lincoln (Ill.). Â
Sawyer Schafer registered 14 kills while
Harrison McBean hit .727. Â The Gray Wolves also swept Clarke as Gebert tallied 12 kills and hit .611. Â On Saturday, Lourdes suffered its first loss of the season in straight sets to third-ranked Missouri Baptist. Â
Jeff Lam hit .444 with 11 kills to lead the offense. Â The Gray Wolves closed the weekend with a sweep of Judson. Â
Ricardo Gehrke had 15 kills while McBean hit 1.000 with nine kills.
Scouting Goshen: The Maple Leafs enter play having won their final three matches as the Judson Early Bird Classic after sweeping Clarke in their finale on Saturday. Â Alexander Rabadzhiev leads Goshen with 107 kills, is hitting .281, and has 14 service aces while Michael Wahl has handed out 188 assists. Â Defensively, Elias Baer has tallied a team-high 57 digs while Ian Fox has registered 29 blocks, including 10 of the solo variety.Â
Scouting Aquinas: The Saints had their five-match winning streak snapped on Saturday in a three-set loss to Missouri Baptist to close out the Judson Early Bird Classic. Â Aquinas hosts Lawrence Tech on Wednesday before Lourdes visits. Â Joshua Boothroyd leads the Saints with 138 kills and 19 service aces while hitting .220 this season. Â Colby Elder has handed out 459 assists. Â Defensively, Josh Evers has 102 digs while Will Donald has recorded 45 blocks.
Best Start in Program History: Lourdes has matched its best 11-match start in program history with its 10-1 record to begin the season. Â The Gray Wolves also started the 2016 campaign with a 10-1 mark before falling in match 12 to Park.
Gebert Named NAIA Attacker of the Week: Evan Gebert has been named the NAIA Attacker of the Week for his efforts in four matches last week. Â The fifth-year senior did not play against Lincoln (Ill.), but averaged 3.42 kills per set while hitting .407 in 12 sets. Â He committed just eight total attack errors while adding 1.42 digs and 0.42 blocks per set.
Trio Sweep WHAC Awards: The Gray Wolves swept all three weekly WHAC awards as
Evan Gebert was named the Attacker of the Week,
Henrique Gehrke earned Setter of the Week honors, and
Guga Heidrich was the league's Defender of the Week. Â Gebert averaged 3.42 kills per set and hit .407, Gehrke handed out 9.83 assists and 1.33 digs per stanza, and Heidrich registered 2.62 digs per set.
McBean Shines in the Middle: Harrison McBean has been stellar in the middle, hitting .571 with 2.00 kills per set over the 19 stanzas in which he has played. Â He is also tallying 0.68 blocks per set this year. Â McBean hit .727 without an error against Lincoln (Ill.) and was flawless with nine kills on nine swings for a 1.000 hitting percentage against Judson last week.Â
Near the Tops in NAIA: As a team, Lourdes ranks third in the NAIA averaging 12.53 assists per set as well as hitting .349 as a team. Â The Gray Wolves are also third nationally with 13.56 kills per set and rank fourth tallying 1.94 service aces per set. Â Individually,
Harrison McBean is the nation's leader hitting .571 while Fed Miller ranks fourth in the same category with a .488 hitting percentage. Â
Henrique Gehrke is fifth in the country with 10.90 assists per set and
Jeff Lam is sixth with 0.69 service aces per stanza.
Gebert Holds School Records: Evan Gebert became the school's career record holder for both kills and service aces earlier this season. Â Gebert has 1,050 career kills and 78 service aces.Â
Record Watch: Henrique Gehrke currently ranks second all-time with 2,068 assists. Â The junior setter is 118 assists behind school record holder, and current assistant coach
Ryan Ferkel (2014-2017), who had 2,282 helpers.
This and That: Lourdes improved to 30-51 all-time against ranked opponents after defeating #7 Saint Xavier and falling to #3 Saint Xavier ... not one player has appeared in all 34 sets, with
Guga Heidrich leading the way having appeared in 32 sets.
