Upcoming in Gray Wolves Volleyball: After eight days off, Lourdes begins a stretch in which it will play four of its next five matches at home inside the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center. Â The sixth-ranked Gray Wolves will entertain Siena Heights on Saturday afternoon in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference action.
Head Coach Greg Reitz: In his ninth season both on the Lourdes bench, and overall coaching men's volleyball,
Greg Reitz has a 171-66 (.722) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves. Â He has earned six conference Coach of the Year honors during his first eight seasons at Lourdes, including the first WHAC Coach of the Year last year. Â He is the only head coach in program history.
Series Notes: Lourdes is 23-1 all-time against Siena Heights in a series that began Feb. 14, 2012. Â The Gray Wolves swept both matches between the two schools last season. Â Lourdes is 3-0 against the Saints inside the Ebeid Recreation Center and 11-0 all-time against the Saints at home.
Wrapping Up Last Week: The Gray Wolves were upset in five sets, 17-25, 26-24, 23-25, 25-22, 15-13, at home by Goshen last Wednesday evening. Â
Evan Gebert led Lourdes with 20 kills while
Sawyer Schafer added 18 more. Â
Guga Heidrich tallied 21 digs in the loss while
Henrique Gehrke handed out 54 assists to go with 18 digs. Â Lourdes rebounded on Saturday with a five-set victory, 18-25, 25-20, 22-25, 25-22, 15-10, over Aquinas on the road. Â
Jeff Lam led Lourdes with 21 kills while
Ricardo Gehrke added 19 kills, hit .472, and had 12 digs. Â Heidrich tallied a team-high 19 digs while
Henrique Gehrke handed out 57 assists.
Scouting Siena Heights: The Saints enter the week have won 10 straight matches after sweeping Olivet at home on Tuesday evening. Â Bryce Johnson has tallied a team-leading 200 kills while Kevin Gomez is hitting .203 and has a team-high 17 service aces. Â Keegan Crawford has handed out 567 assists while. Â Defensively, Emilier De Jesus leads Siena Heights with 196 digs while Shevin Blades has registered 70 blocks, including 13 of the solo variety.
Matching the Best Start in Program History: Lourdes has equalled its best 13-match start in program history with its 11-2 record to begin the season. Â The Gray Wolves also began the 2016 and 2019 campaigns with an 11-2 mark as well on the way to a 13-2 and 15-2 start respectively.
Heidrich Named NAIA Defender of the Week: Guga Heidrich has been named the NAIA Defender of the Week for his efforts in the two matches last week. Â The sophomore senior averaged 4.00 digs per set and committed just one reception error in 81 opportunities. Â He had a career-best 21 digs against Goshen before adding 19 more at ninth-ranked Aquinas.
Another Sweep of WHAC Awards: The Gray Wolves swept all three weekly WHAC awards for the second straight week as
Ricardo Gehrke was named the Attacker of the Week,
Henrique Gehrke earned Setter of the Week honors, and
Guga Heidrich was the league's Defender of the Week. Â Ricardo averaged 3.20 kills per set and hit .311 while adding 3.10 digs per set. Â Henrique handed out 11.10 assists per set and tallied 3.00 digs per set, and Heidrich recorded 4.00 digs per set in the two matches.
A Battle for the Top: Saturday's match with Siena Heights wraps up the first half of the WHAC schedule. Â The winner is assured of being at least tied atop the league standings.
A Mainstay in the National Polls: Lourdes checks in sixth in this week's NAIA Top-10 Coaches' poll. Â The Gray Wolves have been in the poll for 28 consecutive rankings, tied for the second longest active streak in the country behind Park's 29 straight appearances.
Double the Fun: As a team the Gray Wolves had registered just one double-double through the first 11 matches of the season before posting five last week in the two contests. Â
Henrique Gehrke and
Ricardo Gehrke both had double-doubles both nights. Â Henrique had 54 assists and 18 digs against Goshen before adding 57 helpers and 12 digs at Aquinas. Â Ricardo tallied 13 kills and 19 digs against Goshen and added 19 kills and 12 digs versus Aquinas. Â
Evan Gebert also registered a double-double at Aquinas, his second of the year, with 14 kills and 14 digs.
Near the Tops in NAIA: As a team, Lourdes ranks third in the NAIA averaging 13.57 kills per set. Â The Gray Wolves are also fourth in assists per set at 12.57 and service aces, tallying 1.80. Â Lourdes is hitting .308 as a team, the fifth best mark nationally.
Individual National Rankings: Â Individually,
Jeff Lam is third in the NAIA tallying 0.68 service aces per set, having amassed 21 total this season. Â
Henrique Gehrke is third in assists per set at 10.95, dishing out 427 thus far this season. Â
Guga Heidrich is seventh in the country tallying 3.12 digs per set and has tallied 131 through the first 13 matches. Â
Fred Miller is 10th in hitting percentage, swinging at a .427 clip.
Gebert Holds School Records: Evan Gebert became the school's career record holder for both kills and service aces earlier this season. Â Gebert has 1,084 career kills and 82 service aces.Â
Record Watch: Henrique Gehrke currently ranks second all-time with 2,179 assists. Â The junior setter is 103 assists behind school record holder, and current assistant coach
Ryan Ferkel (2014-2017), who had 2,282 helpers.
This and That: Lourdes improved to 31-51 all-time against ranked opponents after defeating #9 Aquinas ... not one player has appeared in all 44 sets, with
Guga Heidrich leading the way having appeared in 42 sets.
