Lourdes opened its 2020-2021 season on Thursday evening, dropping a 37-7 decision to Indiana Tech inside of the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center in a battle of teams ranked in the NAIA top-20.

The fifth-ranked Warriors jumped in front early, taking a 10-0 lead after winning via major decision and injury default in the opening two contests.

Nick Henneman (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.) put the Gray Wolves on the scoreboard at 141 pounds. Ranked fifth nationally, Henneman scored an 11-0 major decision shutout over Kyle Kantola who entered the action ranked 16
th in the country.Â

After Indiana Tech answered with a major decision at 149,
Blake Montrie (Lambertville, Mich./Bedford H.S.) picked up a 7-4 victory in the 157-pound weight class. Montrie, who is ranked seventh in NAIA, was making his Gray Wolf debut.

Indiana Tech would win each of the final five matches on the evening to secure the victory. The Warriors scored a fall, two major decisions, a decision, and another injury default in the upper weights.

"We will learn from the mistakes that we made and put our sole focus on peaking at the rapidly approaching conference tournament," Kelly concluded.

Lourdes' scheduled match for Jan. 29 at Rochester (Mich.) has been cancelled due to COVID-19 regulations in the state of Michigan. The Gray Wolves will now return to action on Feb. 13, hosting the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Championships. Action begins at 10 a.m. inside the Ebeid Rec Center.
