A 21-1 run by Lourdes to open the second half propelled the Gray Wolves to a 68-56 over the University of Northwestern Ohio on Saturday afternoon inside of Racer Gymnasium in Lima, Ohio, as Lourdes split the season series with the Racers.
"We started off slow but started to believe in each other," head coach
John Kenger said after the game. "Kailani (Broyles) was all over the place today and Shae (Pedroza) knocked down a couple of big shots. It was a great team win."
Lourdes fell behind early as a 13-3 run gave Northwestern Ohio a 10-point lead, 21-11, late in the first quarter. The Gray Wolves responded in the second, scoring nine straight points at one stretch to take the lead, 31-28. After the Racers regained the lead by one, Lourdes ended the half scoring eight of the final nine points to take a 39-33 advantage into the locker room.
After shooting 61.1% from the floor in the second, Lourdes connected at a 58.8% clip in the third and utilized the 21-1 run to build a 60-34 lead with four minutes to play in the period. The Gray Wolves maintained their advantage, leading by 23 heading to the final 10 minutes.
The Racers limited Lourdes to just two field goals and five total points in the final stanza, cutting into the Gray Wolf lead, but was never able to get the deficit into single digits.
Shae Pedroza (Napoleon, Ohio/Napoleon H.S.) led Lourdes with 16 points.
Kailani Broyles (Massillon, Ohio/Washington H.S.),
Mary Liedel (Erie, Mich./Mason H.S.), and
Gabby Stover (Lexington, Ohio/Lexington H.S.) added 12 points each giving the Gray Wolves four double figure scorers. Stover also pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.
Tya Bell led Northwestern Ohio (4-2, 1-2) with 19 points while Morgan Hughes added 15 more. Lourdes force 24 Racer turnovers on the night.
Lourdes (2-4, 1-1) will return home on Wednesday evening as the Gray Wolves host Indiana Tech. Tip-off is set for 4:30 p.m. inside the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.
