Lourdes was within two points of 11
th-ranked Indiana Tech with five minutes to play on Wednesday evening, but the Warriors went on an 8-0 run to pull away and defeat the Gray Wolves 78-66 inside the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.
"We played a great first half tonight," head coach
John Kenger said after the game. "The girls worked hard. I feel like the game came down to rebounds and second chances. We need to keep taking steps forward."
Lourdes jumped out quickly, scoring the game's first eight points and building a 12-2 lead midway through the opening period. Indiana Tech responded, scoring the next nine points as part of a 15-3 run to take its first lead of the game, 17-15, with two minutes to play in the quarter.
The game was tied at 19 after one and the lead went back-and forth for the first four minutes of the second stanza. Trailing by one, 29-28, Lourdes scored eight straight points, the last five by
Erica Cary (Central City, Ky./Muhlenberg Country H.S.) to pull ahead by seven. Indiana Tech responded with a 7-0 run of its own before
Logan Ingram (Mount Pleasant, Mich./Mount Pleasant H.S.) drained a three to give the Gray Wolves a 41-39 lead at the break.
After Lourdes scored the first basket of the second half, the Warriors went on an 11-0 run to take the lead for good and carried a 58-51 advantage to the final quarter. Lourdes continued to battle, cutting the deficit to two, 64-62, at the 5:16 mark following a pair of free throws by
Kailani Broyles (Massillon, Ohio/Washington H.S.). Indiana Tech went on one final run, scoring the next eight points to push the lead back to double figures at the 3:30 mark on the way to securing the win.
Lourdes finished the game shooting 45.8% from the floor, after a 54.8% clip in the opening 20 minutes. The Gray Wolves committed just two first half turnovers and finished the night with only nine.
Mary Liedel (Erie, Mich./Mason H.S.) led Lourdes with a double-double, tallying 16 points while grabbing 13 rebounds. Broyles added 13 points while Ingram tallied 12 more. Cary also finished the night in double figures, scoring 10 points off the bench.
Erika Foy led five Warriors in double figures, scoring 22 points while Emma Tuominen added 17 more on 7-of-9 shooting. Alexis Hill had a double-double with 13 points and 11 boards.
Indiana Tech (15-1, 3-0 WHAC) shot 46.6% from the field and were 18-of-21 from the free throw line compared to Lourdes' 4-of-5 effort. The Warriors also committed just five turnovers.
Lourdes (2-5, 1-2) will close out its two-game homestand on Sunday afternoon, hosting Concordia (Mich.). Tip-off is set for noon inside of the Ebeid Rec Center.
