Upcoming in Gray Wolves Volleyball: After a five-set victory in the season opener, Lourdes begins Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference action this week with a pair of matches.  The Gray Wolves will host Mount Vernon Nazarene on Tuesday evening before traveling to Cornerstone for a Friday night affair.

Head Coach Greg Reitz: In his 10th season both on the Lourdes bench, and overall coaching men's volleyball, Greg Reitz has a 178-68 (.724) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves.  He has earned six conference Coach of the Year honors during his first nine seasons at Lourdes, including the WHAC Coach of the Year in 2018.  He is the only head coach in program history.

Series Notes: Lourdes is meeting both Mount Vernon Nazarene and Cornerstone on the volleyball court for the first time in program history.  Both schools are in their first season sponsoring men's volleyball.

Wrapping Up Last Week: The Gray Wolves opened the 2021 season on Thursday (Jan. 21) with a 25-21, 25-23, 13-25, 19-25, 15-11 victory over NCAA Division II Queens (N.C.).  Sawyer Schafer led the Gray Wolves with 14 kills and 12 digs while Guga Heidrich tallied 21 digs.  Harrison McBean recorded six blocks, 10 kills, and hit .471.

Scouting Mount Vernon Nazarene: The Cougars won their first match in program history on Saturday, sweeping Cornerstone 25-17, 25-15, 25-14 at home to open WHAC play.  Spencer Stanley had 10 kills and hit .375 while Jaysen Matsumoto handed out 31 assists.  Riley Barretto recorded four service aces.  Defensively, Caden Donaldson tallied 13 digs while Stanley added three blocks.

Scouting Cornerstone: The Golden Eagles are still looking for their first victory in program history after falling at Mount Vernon Nazarene in straight sets on Saturday.  Cade Meza leads Cornerstone with 20 kills and four service aces while Maximilliano Hernandez has handed out 54 assists.  Defensively, Alex Hekman and Hernandez each have a team-high 19 digs while Mitchell Nichols has registered seven blocks through three matches.

Lourdes in Conference Openers: The Gray Wolves are 2-0 all-time in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference openers after a 3-0 sweep against Lawrence Tech to open the 2020 season.  Lourdes is 8-1 all-time in conference/group openers, having posted wins each of the last eight seasons.  The only conference opening loss came in the program's inaugural match, a 3-0 setback to top-ranked Saint Ambrose on Jan. 17, 2012.

Gray Wolves Sweep WHAC Honors: Lourdes racked up all three Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conferences last week as Harrison McBean was named Attacker of the Week, Guga Heidrich earned Defender of the Week honors, and Henrique Gehrke received Setter of the Week accolades.  McBean tallied 10 kills and hit .471 while Heidrich had 21 digs.  Gehrke handed out 39 assists in the victory over Queens (N.C.).

Schafer Doubles Up for First Time: Sawyer Schafer registered his first collegiate double-double on Thursday with 14 kills and 12 digs against Queens (N.C.).  His dig total marked a new career high while his kill effort ties for his second most as a Gray Wolf.

Gray Wolf Debut: Zach Haube made his Lourdes debut against Queens (N.C.), appearing in two sets and registering two kills.  Haube had not played collegiate volleyball since 2016 when he competed for Siena Heights.

A Season's Work in One Match: Tomas Olak recorded 13 total kills in six matches for the Gray Wolves during the 2020 season.  In the 2021 season opener against Queens (N.C.), Olak put down 12 kills for the Gray Wolves, second most on the squad.

Adding to the Record: Henrique Gehrke continues to distance himself from second place on the school's career assist list.  The senior enters the week with 2,415.  Gehrke has 133 more than current assistant coach Ryan Ferkel (2014-2017), who is second on the list.

Nearing the School Record: Jeff Lam enters the week second in program history with 76 service aces.  He is just 11 aces shy of the school record holder, Evan Gebert (2017-2020), who tallied 87 during his four years at Lourdes.

Record Watch: Jeff Lam and Ricardo Gehrke rank fourth and fifth respectively in career kills.  Lam currently has 746, seven shy of Nick DiMarco's (2012-2013) third place total of 753 while Gehrke is one spot behind Lam in the list with 684 career kills.  Henrique Gehrke ranks sixth all-time at Lourdes with 480 career digs, 82 behind fifth place Matheus Andrade (2018-2019).

An Expanded WHAC: The Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference has added a pair of new teams for the upcoming 2021 men's volleyball season.  Cornerstone has added the sport for the first time while affiliate member Mount Vernon Nazarene has also joined the league.  The WHAC has eight members for the upcoming campaign.

This and That: Lourdes has posted winning records in all nine previous seasons, recording at least 15 victories per year ... the Gray Wolves are 38-6 all-time at home inside the Ebeid Rec Center ... Lourdes has now won three straight season openers and eight of its last nine.
