Lourdes Knocks Off First Place Indiana Tech in Four Sets

After dropping the opening set, Lourdes rebounded to kick off the second half of Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference action with a victory over first place Indiana Tech 22-25, 25-12, 25-15, 25-18 on Wednesday evening inside the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.

"We came out a bit nervous and let them set the rhythm early," head coach Greg Reitz said afterwards.  "We were able to change our serving mentality late in the first set and carried that into the later sets.  This was the best defensive performance we have had against a quality opponent this year."

Indiana Tech (8-11, 4-6 WHAC) jumped out quickly, taking advantage of four attack errors by the Gray Wolves on the way to the first five points of the match.  Lourdes battled back to take a 9-8 lead and the set was tied at 12 when the Warriors went on another 5-0 run to jump in front for good.

After Lourdes committed eight attack errors in the opening set, the Gray Wolves would make just eight more miscues the remainder of the match.  Lourdes hit .400 with 13 kills and just one error in the second on the way to evening the contest.  A 10-3 run put the Gray Wolves up 16-9 and another 6-0 spurt late put the set out of reach.

The Gray Wolves never trailed in the third stanza, holding Indiana Tech to a .000 hitting percentage.  The Gray Wolves built a 16-10 lead and never looked back.

With Lourdes leading 16-15 in the fourth, the Gray Wolves scored six straight points on the way to completing the upset.

Abby Gentile (Blissfield, Mich./Blissfield H.S.) had 20 kills and three service aces while McKenna Hall also had three aces.  Hall had nine kills and 19 digs as well while Michaela Eisenhauer (Castalia, Ohio/Margaretta H.S.) put down nine kills and hit .643 while adding four blocks.  Kylee McBride (Peoria, Ariz./Mountain Ridge H.S.) also had nine kills and 12 digs.

Katey Stakolich (Parma, Ohio/Normandy H.S.) handed out 40 assists while directing an offense that hit .242 for the night while also tallying 16 digs.  Alli Plasencio (Toledo, Ohio/Central Catholic H.S.) had a match-high 30 digs for the Gray Wolves.

Emma Westra led Indiana Tech (17-9, 9-2 WHAC) with 12 kills while Jacey Blust had 22 digs.

Lourdes (8-11, 4-6) will continue its four-match home stand on Friday evening as the Gray Wolves entertain Madonna.  First serve is set for 7 p.m. inside the Ebeid Rec Center.
