Lourdes snapped a four-match winless streak and picked up three key points in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference standings on Saturday afternoon with a 2-1 victory over Rochester (Mich.) at Michigan Stars Sports Center in Washington Township, Mich.
Â
This was a much better team performance than Wednesday," head coach
Matt Johnson said afterwards. "With our defending we were much more compact and patient, and did a better job of recognizing the right moments to press or drop. We were a little fortunate on the second goal, but it was a reward for Farouk working hard defensively. I thought we had two or three other great chances that didn't go in."
Â
The two sides played a scoreless opening 45 minutes despite Lourdes holding an 11-3 shot advantage at halftime.Â
Â
The Gray Wolves finally broke through with 22:56 to play in the match.Â
Leon Eisert (Leipzig, Germany/Kathe-Kollwitz Gymnasium) played a ball to
Savio Adams (Cape Town, South Africa/Zeekoevlei), setting up a breakaway goal.
Â
Rochester (5-7-1, 2-4-1 WHAC) responded just under four minutes later as Rafa Khoury found the back of the net to tie the match at one with just over 19 minutes to play.
Â
Farouk Amoo (South Holland, Ill./Thornwood H.S.) answered with what would prove to be his third match-winning goal of the year just 1:41 after the equalizer, tallying his team-leading 11
th goal of the year.
Â
The Gray Wolves finished the match with a 19-6 shot advantage, including a 13-1 edge on goal. Wyatt Chunn made 11 saves in net to keep the Warriors close.
Â
Lourdes (7-5-1, 2-3-1) begins its final homestand of the season on Wednesday afternoon as the gray Wolves host Northwestern Ohio. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. at Wildcat Stadium.
