Lourdes led for more than 50 minutes on Saturday afternoon, but Michigan-Dearborn rallied with two goals in the final 12 minutes, including the match-winner with just 13 seconds remaining to defeat the Gray Wolves 2-1 at Wildcat Stadium.
"This was a tough loss for us tonight," head coach
Matt Johnson said after the match. "Give credit to Dearborn, they were well-organized and worked hard for each other throughout. Our execution in the attacking moments wasn't quite there and once again we didn't do a very good job of managing the game once we had the lead. We've done an excellent job of getting on top in games all season, but we have to improve our ability to control the game once we're ahead. We have some tough games ahead of us so hopefully that is something we can tighten up."
Lourdes scored first as
Leon Eisert (Leipzig, Germany/Kathe-Kollwitz Gymnasium) sent a through ball into the box where
Savio Adams (Cape Town, South Africa/Zeekoevlei) collected the ball and fired a shot that deflected off the keeper into the net, putting the Gray Wolves on top 1-0.
Lourdes outshot Michigan-Dearborn (2-7, 1-2 WHAC) 10-4 in the opening 45 minutes but was unable to add to its lead.
The Wolverines tied the contest with just 11:19 remaining in regulation as Jason Soltis picked up the ball following a scramble in the box and scored, making it a 1-1 match.
Austin Dukes then sent a long throw-in to John Soltis, who headed home the match-winner with 13 ticks left on the clock.
The Gray Wolves finished the match with a 14-9 shot advantage but Everest Brace made five saves in goal for the Wolverines while
Igor Silva (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Pentagono) made three stops for Lourdes.
Lourdes will have a week off before returning to action next Saturday as the Gray Wolves host Aquinas. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at Wildcat Stadium.
