Lourdes concluded its weekend road trip in Grand Rapids, Mich. on Saturday afternoon, dropping a 23-25, 25-18, 25-23, 25-17 match against Cornerstone inside of Mol Arena.
"A poor first set led to a battle which ultimately ended with us not having enough on the execution scale to earn the victory," head coach
Greg Reitz said afterwards.
Lourdes was able to prevail early in an error-filled opening set by both schools. The Gray Wolves hit just .041 with nine kills while Cornerstone made 11 miscues and swung at a .038 clip. The set saw 13 ties and six lead changes before Lourdes scored the final two points behind a block from
Macey Zinser (Bucyrus, Ohio/Wynford H.S.) and an ace from
McKenna Hall (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview H.S.).
The Gray Wolves led 7-5 in set two before Cornerstone went on an 8-1 run to pull in front. Another five consecutive points allowed the Golden Eagles to pull out the win after Lourdes was able to close to within two, 17-15.
In the third, Lourdes had a 20-17 lead after four consecutive points, including a pair of aces from
Lydia Landoll (Monroeville, Ohio/Monroeville H.S.), but the Golden Eagles scored seven of the final nine points to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
Cornerstone hit .281 in the fourth set on the way to securing the victory. The Golden Eagles scored five of the first six points and never trailed. The Gray Wolves pulled to within two, 14-12, before four straight points from the hosts allowed them to extend their lead again.
Kortney Ellison (Millbury, Ohio/Lake H.S.) led Lourdes with 12 kills while Hall added 11 more to go along with 14 digs.
Katey Stakolich (Parma, Ohio/Normandy H.S.) handed out 38 assists as the team hit .095 for the match and tallied 21 digs. Landoll recorded five of the Gray Wolves' 10 aces on the day.
Defensively,
Alli Plasencio (Toledo, Ohio/Central Catholic H.S.) notched 23 digs while
Quinn Yondo (Grand Rapids, Mich./Catholic Central H.S.) added 13 more.
Michaela Eisenhauer (Castalia, Ohio/Margaretta H.S.) recorded five blocks.
Rylie Walters led Cornerstone (17-12, 11-3 WHAC) with 13 kills and 16 digs while Kathryn Detweiler hit .500 with 11 kills. Patsy Morris added 27 digs.
Lourdes (9-15, 5-10) returns home on Wednesday evening as the Gray Wolves host Lawrence Tech. First serve is set for 7 p.m. inside the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center with Senior Night activities taking place prior to the match.
