Lourdes set a new school record for points in a game on Tuesday evening as the Gray Wolves opened the 2021-2022 season with a convincing 116-54 victory over East-West inside the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.
The Gray Wolves surpassed their previous school mark of 114 points set in a 114-56 win over Wright State-Lake on Nov. 13, 2019.
"I am proud of the guys," head coach
Dennis Hopson said after the win. "We are a deep team and able to go with a variety of combinations of guys. Our field goal percentage (63.2%), three-point field goal percentage (40.6%), and points in the paint (58) were key to the win. We have a bunch of guys that can shoot the basketball and we are encouraging those guys to take shots."
Nick Welch (Temperance, Mich./Saint Mary Catholic Central H.S.) and
Jackie Harris (Toledo, Ohio/Saint Francis de Sales H.S.) both recorded double-doubles as the Gray Wolves had six players finish in double figures in scoring and three post double-figure rebounding totals. Welch finished the night with 20 points and 13 rebounds on 9-of-11 shooting from the floor, including a perfect 9-for-9 inside the arc. Harris made four triples on his way to 16 points and 10 rebounds.
Little Anderson (Toledo, Ohio/Cardinal Stritch H.S.) added 19 points on 8-of-11 shooting while
Joey Holifield (Toledo, Ohio/Cardinal Stritch H.S.) chipped in 14 points.
Anthony Mills (Columbus, Ohio/Westerville South H.S). contributed 12 points and
Brett Lauf (Napoleon, Ohio/Napoleon H.S) added 10 more.
McRay White (Cleveland, Ohio/Garfield Heights H.S.) pulled down 11 rebounds, including five on the offensive end.
Leading 9-8 six minutes into the game, Lourdes went on a 25-4 run in less than seven minutes to pull away. Another 17-2 run before halftime allowed the Gray Wolves to build a 57-26 lead at the break. Lourdes made another big run, this one 21-4, late in the second half in securing the win.
The Gray Wolves outrebounded East-West 53-26 for the evening and committed just 11 turnovers offensively. Lourdes held a 21-2 advantage in fast break points and a 23-6 edge in points of miscues.
De'Quanii Jackson led East-West (0-3) with 18 points.
Lourdes (1-0) returns to the hardwood on Saturday, Nov. 6, as the Gray Wolves host Miami-Middletown. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. inside the Ebeid Rec Center.
