Lourdes Closes Regular Season with Second Straight Victory

Lourdes wrapped up the 2021 regular season on Saturday afternoon with a 3-2 victory over Cornerstone at the Soccer Stadium in Grand Rapids, Mich. to secure its spot in the upcoming Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference tournament.

"Cornerstone is a really difficult place to play," head coach Matt Johnson said afterwards.  "The field surface is big and different than everyone else which makes it tough to connect passes sometimes and find a rhythm.  We definitely saw that at times in the first half, but give credit to the guys for staying at it and persevering and we scored some really quality goals.  A good way to end a regular season and now we have a challenge in front of us to try and go win a playoff game on the road next Saturday."

Jeff Herrema put the Golden Eagles in front 17:29 into the match with his unassisted goal.  The Gray Wolves answered before halftime though, as Farouk Amoo (South Holland, Ill./Thornwood H.S.) scored his team-leading 14th goal of the season with Kevin Gonzalez (Pasadena, Texas/South Houston H.S.) drawing the assist.

Coming out of intermission, Diego Pereira (Asuncion, Paraguay/Cristo Rey) notched his fifth goal of the season, an unassisted tally, just 3:20 into the second half to put the Gray Wolves in front.

Leon Eisert (Leipzig, Germany/Kathe-Kollwitz Gymnasium) made it 3-1 Lourdes with his sixth goal of the year.  Amoo garnered the assist, giving him 33 points this season, a single season record for the Gray Wolves.

Cornerstone (4-12-1, 3-7) cut its deficit in half with a goal by Chana Batan with just 1:12 to play, but was unable to find the equalizer down the stretch.

Lourdes outshot the Golden Eagles 15-8 for the match and had a 5-2 edge in corner kick opportunities.  Igor Silva (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Pentagono) made four saves in goal for the Gray Wolves while Alan Roman made two stops for Cornerstone.

Lourdes (9-7-1, 4-5-1) has assured itself of a winning season and will head to the WHAC tournament next Saturday.  The league will announce the official pairings later this weekend.
