#16 Lourdes Upsets NCAA D2 #7 Ashland in Final Bout

Final Results

In a dual match that needed overtime in the final bout of the evening to decide it, NAIA 16th-ranked Lourdes scored the sudden victory to upset NCAA Division II #7 Ashland 22-19 on Friday evening inside the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.

With the overall match knotted 19-19, Alec Moore-Nash (Price Hill, Ohio/Elder H.S.) went toe-to-toe with Ty Petrey at 285 pounds.  After a scoreless opening period, the two grapplers exchanged escapes over the next two periods, heading to overtime 1-1.  In sudden victory, Petrey was called for stalling, awarding Moore-Nash the deciding point in the 2-1 win.

"This is an incredible win for our wrestling program," head coach Dock Kelly III said afterwards.  "I am extremely proud of this team, as well as the progress that the Lourdes University wrestling program has made over the past five years.  The guys have worked really hard, and Coach Piszker did an incredible job getting them prepared.  We are going to enjoy this victory and then prepare to send our seniors out on a winning note on Wednesday."

Ashland (0-1) opened the match quickly as Cael Woods registered a fall just 1:12 into his 125-pound bout.  The Gray Wolves would fight back though with wins in the next three contests.

Jimmy Balazy (Parma, Ohio/Padua Franciscan H.S.) put Lourdes on the scoreboard with a 6-2 decision at 133 pounds.  He built a 4-1 lead after the opening period, including 2:16 of riding time, to pick up his first win of the year.  Nick Henneman (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.) gave the Gray Wolves the lead 7-6, posting a shutout with a 10-0 major decision at 141 pounds over Luke Wymer, who is ranked 10th in NCAA Division II individually.  Henneman took a 4-0 lead after the opening period and added a four-point near fall in the final stanza to earn the major.

Cyle Wells (Springfield, Ohio/Tecumseh H.S.) increased the advantage to 13-6 at 149 pounds.  He took an early 4-2 lead in his match before pinning Jesse Bowers at the 2:19 mark of the opening frame for his second fall of the season.

Ashland responded with four straight wins in the middle weights.  Three decisions and a major decision put the Eagles in front 19-13 heading into the final two contests.  After a scoreless opening period at 197 pounds, Carter Kroll (Ontario, Ohio/Ontario H.S.) was awarded a win via injury forfeit at the 3:52 mark in the second period, evening the overall score 19-19, and setting up the decisive heavyweight bout.

Lourdes (2-0) will conclude the home portion of its schedule on Wednesday evening as the Gray Wolves host a tri-match.  Lourdes will face Rio Grande at 5 p.m. and Cornerstone at 7 p.m. with the Red Storm and Golden Eagles meeting each other in between.  The action will take place inside the Ebeid Rec Center, with Senior Night activities taking place prior to the Cornerstone contest.
