Lourdes Sweeps John Carroll Duals to Remain Undefeated

Lake Erie Results
Mount Saint Joseph Results
John Carroll Results

Lourdes rallied with wins in each of the final three bouts against John Carroll on Sunday afternoon to defeat the Blue Streaks 22-20 and finish a perfect 3-0 day at the John Carroll Duals inside the Decarlo Varsity Center in University Heights, Ohio.

The Gray Wolves opened the day with a 38-12 victory over Lake Erie and downed Mount Saint Joseph 30-9 before defeating the NCAA Division III seventh-ranked hosts to improve to 7-0 on the season.

"This was an incredible day of wrestling for us," head coach Dock Kelly III said afterwards.  "I'm so proud of the way that our team battled and rallied when we were down in the last dual of the day.  Coach Piszker had these guys ready to wrestle, and it showed from the first whistle all the way until the last match.  We are riding high headed into Thanksgiving break, but we will get rested up and get prepared to end the semester strong in December."

Trailing 20-10 with three bouts remaining against John Carroll, Will Speight (Bedford, Ohio/Bedford H.S.) started the comeback with a 9-3 decision at 184 pounds.  Carter Kroll (Ontario, Ohio/Ontario H.S.) followed with a 7-6 decision at 197 pounds, pulling the Gray Wolves to within two.  Alec Moore-Nash (Price Hill, Ohio/Elder H.S.) completed the comeback, scoring a pin at the horn of the second period for his second late-match heroics against a ranked foe this season.

Nick Henneman (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.) scored his third fall of the day to put Lourdes on the scoreboard while Blake Montrie (Lambertville, Mich./Bedford H.S.) picked up a 12-4 major decision.

Henneman needed just 1:22 to pin John Carroll's Jarrod Brezovec, who is the number two ranked wrestler in NCAA Division III at 141 pounds.  Henneman also scored a fall 18 seconds into his contest against Lake Erie and at the 1:41 mark against Mount Saint Joseph.

Jimmy Balazy (Parma, Ohio/Padua Franciscan H.S.) earned a pair of decisions on the day for the Gray Wolves, winning 7-4 against Lake Erie and 9-3 versus Mount Saint Joseph at 133 pounds.  At 149 pounds, Cyle Wells (Springfield, Ohio/Tecumseh H.S.) recorded a major decision in the win over Mount Saint Joseph, 16-4.

Montrie, like Henneman, had an undefeated day.  After winning via forfeit against Lake Erie, he notched a 14-5 major decision against Mount Saint Joseph.  Richard Jackson (Toledo, Ohio/Central Catholic H.S.) had a pair of major decisions.  He scored a 16-6 win to open the day before posting a 9-0 shutout against Mount Saint Joseph.

Drew Torres (Phoenix, Ariz./Tempe Union H.S.) notched a major decision against Lake Erie with his 11-3 win before tallying a 7-4 decision in match two.  Riley Rhone (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven H.S.) was credited with a forfeit victory for Lourdes at 125 pounds to open the Mount Saint Joseph contest.

Lourdes will return to action on Dec. 4 as the Gray Wolves take part in the Campbellsville Duals.  Lourdes will face Truett McConnell, the hosts Tigers, Texas Wesleyan, and Cumberland (Tenn.) inside Gosser Gymnasium in Campbellsville, Ky. beginning at 10 a.m.
