Lourdes jumped out to a quick double figure lead on Tuesday evening on the way to defeating the University of Northwestern Ohio 94-69 inside the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.
"We shot the ball much better tonight from both the two and the three," head coach
Dennis Hopson said afterwards. "We also minimized our turnovers. We wanted to come out and hit them hard from the start with our pressure to give ourselves some energy and we did that."
Jackie Harris (Toledo, Ohio/Saint Francis de Sales H.S.) drained a three-pointer just five minutes into the game to give the Gray Wolves an early 17-5 lead. The lead swelled to 19, 32-13, at the 10-minute mark following a
N'Keeley Elmore (Columbus, Ohio/Northland H.S.) lay-in.
The Racers responded with the game's next 10 points to pull within nine with seven minutes to play before halftime before Lourdes went on another run. A late 9-0 spurt allowed Lourdes to pull in front by 21, a lead they would take into the break, 50-29.
The Gray Wolf advantage grew to 24, 58-34, just three minutes out of the locker room. Northwestern Ohio tried to cut into is deficit, pulling within 16, 70-54, with just under 10 minutes to play before Lourdes scored the next 14 points to push the lead to 30 and put the game out of reach.
Harris led Lourdes with 22 points off the bench on 8-of-11 shooting, including 6-of-8 from three-point range.
Joey Holifield (Toledo, Ohio/Cardinal Stritch H.S.) added 21 points while
Little Anderson (Toledo, Ohio/Cardinal Stritch H.S.) chipped in 14 more.
Nick Welch (Temperance, Mich./Saint Mary Catholic Central H.S.) registered a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds.
Lourdes shot 49.3% from the floor, including 44.4% (12-of-27) from three-point range and committed just 11 turnovers. The Gray Wolves also held a 45-37 edge on the glass.
Jalen Clark led Northwestern Ohio (2-7, 1-3 WHAC) with 13 points as the Racers shot just 35.8% from the field and had 14 miscues.
Lourdes (5-2, 2-2) will have eight days off before returning to the court on Wednesday, Dec. 1, traveling to Southfield, Mich. to face Lawrence Tech. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. inside of Ridler Fieldhouse.
