The Lourdes defense forced 30 turnovers and held Carlow to just 12 second half points on Thursday evening as the Gray Wolves defeated the Celtics 64-43 inside the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.
"I am happy the team stayed focused on our goals for the game, and we got the victory," head coach
Tandy Bradford said afterwards. "We needed someone to step up off the bench and Addie (Conroy) did that tonight to give us a spark. We are leading with our defense."
The Gray Wolves turned the 30 turnovers into 32 points and grabbed 23 offensive rebounds, leading to 16 second chance points on the evening.
The game was tied at 31 at intermission before Lourdes held Carlow (1-1) to just one field goal over the first eight minutes of the third period. The Gray Wolves opened the half with a 12-4 run to take the lead and never trailed after halftime.
Leading by seven, 45-38, heading to the fourth, the Gray Wolves scored the first 13 points of the final stanza, holding the Celtics scoreless for nearly eight minutes on the way to securing their second straight victory.
Mercedes Wagner (Sherwood, Ohio/Fairview H.S.) had a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds while adding four steals and a pair of blocked shots.
Gabby Stover (Lexington, Ohio/Lexington H.S.) added 11 points and eight boards.
Addie Conroy (Cleveland, Ohio/Padua Franciscan H.S.) made three three-pointers to add nine points as did
Shae Pedroza (Napoleon, Ohio/Napoleon H.S.).
Lourdes shot 37.9% from the floor but connected at an 81.8% clip from the free throw line to overcome 22 turnovers of its own.
Angelica Orozco led Carlow with 15 points while Megan Ost added 10 points and nine boards. The Celtics shot just 27.8% from the field for the evening.
Lourdes (2-2) looks for its third consecutive victory on Saturday afternoon as the Gray Wolves host Miami-Middletown as part of Homecoming. Tip-off is set for 3:30 p.m. inside the Ebeid Rec Center.
