Lourdes Downs Wilberforce to Remain Unbeaten at Home

For the third time in the first nine games of the season Lourdes reached the century mark on Saturday afternoon as the Gray Wolves cruised to a 101-70 victory over Wilberforce inside the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.

The Gray Wolves bounced back from a loss at Lawrence Tech on Wednesday and improved to 4-0 on the season on their home floor.

"We did a good job defensively in the first half," head coach Dennis Hopson said afterwards.  "We are finally understanding the zone and the slides in it.  In the second half we allowed them to shoot the ball better."

Lourdes shot 56.9% from the floor, including 47.1% (8-of-17) from three-point range, while committing just 11 turnovers.  The Gray Wolves also forced 22 Bulldog turnovers defensively.

"I was impressed with the way we shot the ball today and scoring 60 points in the paint," Hopson added.

Leading 22-17 at the midway point of the first half, Lourdes scored nine consecutive points to build a double-digit lead, an advantage they would not relinquish the rest of the way.  The nine straight points were part of an 18-6 run that allowed the lead to grow to 17, 40-23, with four minutes to play before halftime.  The Gray Wolves would eventually take a 49-32 lead into the locker room.

A 23-4 run early in the second half allowed Lourdes to extend the lead to 35, 77-38, with 13 minutes remaining, and the Gray Wolves pushed the lead to as many as 40, 90-50, with just under eight minutes left in the contest.  Wilberforce would go on a late 15-2 run to cut into the deficit slightly down the stretch.

Nick Welch (Temperance, Mich./Saint Mary Catholic Central H.S.) registered a double-double to lead Lourdes with 20 points and 12 rebounds in just 27 minutes of action.  He was 9-of-13 from the floor.

Jackie Harris (Toledo, Ohio/Saint Francis de Sales H.S.) added 16 points off the bench while McRay White (Cleveland, Ohio/Garfield Heights H.S.) added 15 points.  Joey Holifield (Toledo, Ohio/Cardinal Stritch H.S.) chipped in 14 points while N'Keeley Elmore (Columbus, Ohio/Northland H.S.) added 12 more.  Brett Lauf (Napoleon, Ohio/Napoleon H.S.) dished out seven assists and had four steals.

Bobby McFadden led Wilberforce (4-10) with 19 points and six rebounds.

Lourdes (6-3) returns to the road on Monday evening as the Gray Wolves travel to South Euclid, Ohio to face Notre Dame (Ohio).  Tip-off in the non-conference contest is set for 6 p.m. inside of Murphy Gymnasium.
