Gray Wolves Drop Road Contest at Cornerstone

Despite 25 points off the bench from Brett Lauf (Napoleon, Ohio/Napoleon H.S.), Lourdes managed just 30 points from its starters on Wednesday evening as the Gray Wolves suffered an 85-67 setback to Cornerstone inside of Mol Arena in Grand Rapids, Mich.

After Cornerstone built a 28-21 lead with less than eight minutes to play in the opening half, Lourdes scored 10 straight points, capped by a three-pointer from Clif Snow (Middletown, Ohio/Middletown H.S.) to pull in front by three.  The lead was short lived though, and the Golden Eagles closed the opening 20 minutes by scoring the final four points to take a 39-35 lead into the locker room.

A 10-3 run by the hosts out of intermission pushed the Cornerstone advantage to double figures and after a Lauf triple, Lourdes would not be any closer than nine the rest of the way.  A 13-1 run broke the game open, allowing the Golden Eagles to push the lead to 21, 72-51, on the way to defending its home court.

Little Anderson (Toledo, Ohio/Cardinal Stritch H.S.) was the only other Gray Wolf to finish in double figures besides Lauf, scoring 13 points.  Lourdes shot just 33.3% from the floor, including a 30.6% mark over the final 20 minutes.

Kyle Hayes led Cornerstone (10-4, 7-2 WHAC) with 15 points while Christian Rodriguez and Tyler Baker added 14 points each.  Rodriguez also dished out eight assists for an offense that shot 53.8% from the field on the evening.

Lourdes will return home for the final time during the regular season on Friday afternoon, as the Gray Wolves host Lawrence Tech in a make-up contest from a Feb. 6 postponement.  Tip-off is set for 4 p.m. inside the Russel J. Ebeid Recreation Center.
