Lourdes hit just .118 offensively on Saturday evening and was unable to complete a late comeback bid as the Gray Wolves suffered a 25-9, 25-21, 19-25, 25-23 loss to Lawrence Tech on the road inside of Ridler Fieldhouse in Southfield, Mich.
"This was a tough loss for us today," head coach
Greg Reitz said after the match. "We came in looking to put some things together and break into the win column, but it just wasn't our day."
Lourdes led 4-3 in the opening set before an 11-1 run by the Blue Devils, including eight straight points off the service of Madeline Hudson. Lawrence Tech also closed the set scoring the final 10 points, taking advantage of 11 Gray Wolf hitting errors in the stanza.
In set two Lourdes built a 14-6 lead before an 11-0 run by Lawrence Tech spearheaded from the service of Shelby Rasch put the Blue Devils in front for good. Lourdes pulled within one, 21-20, but the hosts responded to build a 2-0 lead in the match.
Set three saw the Gray Wolves respond with 16 kills. Lourdes built a 20-10 lead only to see the Blue Devils battle back within four, 23-19, before Lourdes put the set away to extend the match. In the fourth, Lawrence Tech jumped out to a 17-9 lead only to withstand a late run by Lourdes. The Gray Wolves were within one, 24-23, but a final kill by the Blue Devils ended the match.
Vanessa Villarreal (Monroe, Mich./Saint Marcy Central Catholic H.S.) led Lourdes with 14 kills and hit .214 as the only Gray Wolf to tally a double figure kill total.
Yasmin Assis (Salto, Brazil/Antonio Alves Aranha H.S.) handed out 31 assists and tied for team-high honors with 16 digs for a double-double.
Kennedy Ames (Milan, Ohio/Edison H.S.) also registered 16 digs for the Gray Wolves while
Alli Plasencio (Toledo, Ohio/Central Catholic H.S.) added 14 more.
McKenna Hall (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview H.S.) added 10 digs.
Jessica Lodge led Lawrence Tech (2-5, 2-5 WHAC) with 17 kills while Nichole Hyduk had 25 digs. The Blue Devils hit .174 for the match and recorded nine service aces.
"We will be back on the court tomorrow to try and figure things out," Reitz concluded.
Lourdes (0-4, 0-3) will close out its four-match road trip on Sunday evening as the Gray Wolves travel to Adrian, Mich. to battle Siena Heights. First serve is set for 5 p.m. inside the SHU Fieldhouse.
