Fourth-ranked Lourdes moved back into a tie for first place in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference on Sunday afternoon with a 25-21, 25-20, 16-25, 25-23 victory over Siena Heights inside the SHU Fieldhouse in Adrian, Mich.
"We were able to put together a pretty solid match from start to finish," head coach
Greg Reitz said afterwards. "Our energy was a little inconsistent, but we were good for much of the match."
Both teams started strong offensively with Lourdes tallying 16 kills and hitting .387 in the opening stanza while Siena Heights swung at a .407 clip. After yielding the opening point of the match, Lourdes never trailed in the set. While the lead grew to as many as five on several occasions, the Saints battled back to pull within one, 19-18, before Lourdes scored the next three points.
Lourdes scored the first five points of set two and limited the Saints to just six kills and a -.045 hitting percentage in the stanza while building a 2-0 lead in the match. The Gray Wolves led by as many as nine in the set before Siena Heights made a small run late.
Siena Heights never trailed in the third set while extending the match. The Saints took and early 9-2 lead and after Lourdes closed to within two, 11-9, went on another 10-3 run to pull away. The fourth set had 11 ties before the Gray Wolves captured the match. Lourdes led 6-1 early before the Saints answered with five straight points to pull even. The set was tied at 22 late before the Gray Wolves tallied three of the next four points for the win.
Jeff Lam (Richmond, B.C./Hugh McRoberts H.S.) led Lourdes with 17 kills and 10 digs while
Ricardo Gehrke (Blumenau, Brazil/Escola Barao Do Rio Branco) added 13 kills.
Stefan Albrecht (Euclid, Ohio/Middletown [Wis.] H.S.) added 12 kills while hitting .400.
Ian Fields (Phoenix, Ariz./Sandra Day O'Connor H.S.) handed out 47 assists while running an offense that hit .168 on the night. Defensively,
Guga Heidrich (Braco do Norte, Brazil/Colegio Unificado) tallied a match-high 15 digs.
Alex Garavalia led Siena Heights (2-2, 1-2 WHAC) with 14 kills while Joudiel Poveymirow had a team-high 12 digs.
Lourdes (6-1, 4-1) continues its road trip on Tuesday afternoon as the Gray Wolves travel to Mount Vernon, Ohio to battle Mount Vernon Nazarene. First serve has been moved up to 4 p.m. inside of Ariel Arena.
