Lourdes rallied in the second half to close out the regular season with a victory on Tuesday evening as the Gray Wolves defeated Concordia (Mich.) 75-68 inside of Cardinal Fieldhouse in Ann Arbor, Mich.
Kenny Coleman (Toledo, Ohio/Saint Francis de Sales H.S.) made 9-of-11 from the floor, including 4-of-5 from three-point range, on his way to 24 points off the bench.
Julian Egbo (Toledo, Ohio/Rogers H.S.) added 16 points and
Brett Lauf (Napoleon, Ohio/Napoleon H.S.) chipped in 14 more as both players shot better than 50% from the floor.
"Kenny did a nice job on offense which kept the game close," head coach
Dennis Hopson said afterwards. "With Kenny's offense and the rest of the team buckling down on defense in the last 10 minutes of the game, we were able to get the win."
The Gray Wolves raced out to an early 15-5 lead less than five minutes into the game before Concordia answered with a 10-0 run of its own. After Lourdes rebuilt a five-point advantage, a 14-4 spurt put the Cardinals in front 29-24 at the 6:15 mark of the first half. The Gray Wolves were able to tie the game at 29 but Concordia regained the lead, taking a 35-31 advantage into the locker room.
Concordia pushed its lead to nine, 48-39, four minutes into the second half before Lourdes made a run. A 13-2 spurt capped with a Lauf basket following a
Little Anderson (Toledo, Ohio/Cardinal Stritch H.S.) steal put the Gray Wolves in front 52-50.
The Gray Wolves extended the run to 21-6 while pushing its lead to six, 60-54, with 8:40 to play. Concordia battled back to tie the game at 63 and 65 but a pair of free throws by Ebgo gave the Gray Wolves the lead for good at the 2:53 mark. The Cardinals cut the advantage to one, 69-68, with 1:38 to play but Lauf answered with a basket and the Gray Wolves made four free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
Lourdes shot 48.3% from the floor for the night while holding the Cardinals to just a 40.3% clip. Both teams took care of the basketball, with Lourdes committing just eight turnovers and Concordia making seven miscues.
Thomsa Hronis led Concordia (7-10, 5-7 WHAC) with 25 points, making seven three-pointers. Bernard Kasanda added 13 points.
Lourdes outrebounded the Cardinals 38-30, led by
Clif Snow (Middletown, Ohio/Middletown H.S.) who had 11 boards.
Lourdes (9-5, 7-3) will await the results of the other games from the final night of the regular season before heading into the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference tournament beginning Thursday night. Official pairings will be announced by the league office later in the evening.
