Lourdes Hosts Cornerstone Friday to Begin Three-Match Homestand

Upcoming in Gray Wolves Volleyball: Lourdes looks to extend its three-match winning streak on Friday afternoon as the Gray Wolves welcome Cornerstone to the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center to begin a three-match homestand.

Head Coach Greg Reitz: In his 10th season both on the Lourdes bench, and overall coaching men's volleyball, Greg Reitz has a 184-69 (.727) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves.  He has earned six conference Coach of the Year honors during his first nine seasons at Lourdes, including the WHAC Coach of the Year in 2018.  He is the only head coach in program history.

Series Notes: Lourdes won is only previous meeting against Cornerstone, a four-set victory, on January 29, 2021 as the two schools met for the first time this season in Grand Rapids, Mich.

Wrapping Up Last Week: Lourdes won the first two sets before being pushed five in a 25-21, 25-23, 25-27, 19-25, 15-12 victory over ninth-ranked Saint Xavier on Friday (Feb. 19).  Jeff Lam hit .440 with 28 kills in the victory.  On Sunday, the Gray Wolves scored a 25-21, 25-20, 16-25, 25-23 win on the road at Siena Heights.  Lam tallied 17 kills and 10 digs in the win.  On Tuesday, Lourdes was a 25-19, 25-15, 25-19 victor on the road at Mount Vernon Nazarene.  Lam put down 13 kills in that triumph.

Scouting Cornerstone: The Golden Eagles are still looking for their first win in program history after falling in straight sets at Siena Heights on Wednesday night.  Cade Meza leads Cornerstone with 52 kills while Maximilliano Hernandez has handed out 174 assists.  Hernadez has also registered a team-high eight service aces.  Defensively, Hernandez has tallied a team-best 56 digs while Jacob Brinks has 20 blocks.

More WHAC Honors: For the fourth time this season, Lourdes swept all three Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference honors.  Jeff Lam was named the Attacker of the Week for the third time this season.  Max Petuhov earned his first WHAC Defender of the Week honor while Ian Fields was named Setter of the Week for the first time this season.  The Gray Wolves also swept WHAC Player of the Week awards on Jan. 27, Feb. 3, and Feb. 10.

Round Two of WHAC Play:  Friday begins the second half of the WHAC slate for the Gray Wolves.  This year teams do not necessarily play each other once per half as in previous years due to COVID-19 and gym availability.  Lourdes has completed its season series with Mount Vernon Nazarene in the first half but will not see Aquinas at all until this second half. 

Double Figures Regularly: Jeff Lam has tallied double figure kills in all seven matches in which he has played this season.  The senior has at least 12 kills in each contest with a career-high 28 against Saint Xavier on Feb. 19.

Double-Doubles: Lourdes players have registered three double-doubles this season, the most recent by Jeff Lam on Sunday at Siena Heights.  He tallied 17 kills and 10 digs after also having one earlier this year against Goshen (14 kills, 16 digs).  Sawyer Schafer had the team's first double-double of the year with 14 kills and 12 digs in the season opener against Queens (N.C.).

Lam Among Nation's Best: Jeff Lam ranks second in all of the NAIA averaging 4.76 kills per set.  The senior also is second in the country tallying 0.76 service aces per stanza.  Lam also is among the top-50 in digs per set (45th, 2.20) and hitting percentage (50th, .312).

Playing Defense: Lourdes leads is second among all NAIA programs averaging 12.39 digs per set thus far in 2021.  The Gray Wolves have outdug all but one (Mount Vernon Nazarene) of their opponents this year.  Individually, Guga Heidrich is third the NAIA tallying 3.84 digs per stanza while Sawyer Schafer (42nd, 2.2) ranks in the top-50 nationally as well.

Setting a New School Record: Jeff Lam set a new program record with his 88th career service ace at Indiana Tech.  He currently has 95 aces after passing his former teammate, Evan Gebert (2017-2020), who tallied 87 during his four years at Lourdes.

Also Among the NAIA Leaders: Lourdes ranks fifth in the NAIA handing out 11.90 assists per set.  The Gray Wolves also rank in the top-25 in service aces per set (18th, 1.55) and hitting percentage (21st, .215).  Individually, Henrique Gehrke is 10th nationally tallying 9.05 assists per set.

Adding to the Record: Henrique Gehrke continues to distance himself from second place on the school's career assist list.  The senior enters the week with 2,548 helpers.  Gehrke has 266 assists more than current assistant coach Ryan Ferkel (2014-2017), who is second on the list.  

Record Watch: Jeff Lam and Ricardo Gehrke rank third and fifth respectively in career kills.  Lam currently has 865 kills, surpassing Nick DiMarco's (2012-2013) total of 753 while Gehrke is one spot behind DiMarco in the list with 729 career kills.  Lam is 137 kills behind second place Frank Craig (2012-2015), who graduated with 1,002 kills.  Henrique Gehrke ranks sixth all-time at Lourdes with 503 career digs, 59 behind fifth place Matheus Andrade (2018-2019).

This and That: The Gray Wolves are holding the opposition to just .138 hitting ... Lourdes has won eight straight matches at home in the Ebeid Rec Center and is 30-8 all-time on its home court.
