Lourdes Upsets Top-Seeded Rochester in WHAC Quarterfinals

Lourdes earned its first Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference tournament victory in program history on Thursday evening as the eighth-seeded Gray Wolves shocked regular season champion Rochester (Mich.) 66-60 inside of Garth Pleasant Arena in Rochester Hills, Mich.

The Gray Wolves became just the second number eight seed in league history to ever down the top seed, and the first since Tri-State defeated Cornerstone in 2000.

"We started how we wanted and were very aggressive and did a good job of handling their pressure," head coach John Kenger said after the win.  "We had just the right number of moments in the second half to pull out the win.  I am super proud of this team and the heart they played with."

The Lourdes defense stifled the Warriors in the first half, holding Rochester to just 13.5% (5-of-37) shooting from the floor at the break.

Leading 9-6, the Gray Wolves scored the next eight points to take a double figure lead for the first time after Leah Goodwin (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg H.S.) scored in the opening seconds of the second period.

A 16-3 run over eight minutes pushed the lead to as many as 23, 34-11, in the final minute of the half before a Rochester triple made it a 20-point Lourdes advantage at the break.

The Gray Wolves shot 54.2% in the first 20 minutes to offset 13 turnovers.

Lourdes held Rochester scoreless for the first five minutes of the second half, pushing the lead to 40-14.  The Gray Wolves remained in control throughout most of the third period before a late run by the Warriors allowed the hosts to close within 15, 48-33, heading to the final stanza.

An 8-2 run to open the fourth pulled the Warriors to within nine, 50-41, before Kailani Broyles (Massillon, Ohio/Washington H.S.) scored on a lay-in to push the lead back to 11 at the five-minute mark. Rochester showed why they went through the WHAC regular season undefeated at 12-0 by making it a six-point game, 60-54, at the two-minute mark.

Mary Liedel (Erie, Mich./Mason H.S.) made it a three-possession game with a layup with 1:16 to play before the Warriors answered with a second chance bucket at the 48 second mark.  Sara Semler (Toledo, Ohio/Whitmer H.S.) was fouled as the shot clock was winding down and made two free throws to push the lead back to eight with 23 ticks left on the clock.

After a triple brought the Warriors within five, 64-59, with nine seconds to play, Goodwin made a pair of free throws down the stretch to secure the victory.

Liedel and Broyles led Lourdes with 16 points each while Goodwin and Gabby Stover (Lexington, Ohio/Lexington H.S.) added 10 points each.  Goodwin also had 12 rebounds for a double-double.  Lourdes finished the game shooting 44% from the floor and overcame 25 turnovers.

Jacara Thompson led Rochester (13-2) with 22 points while Delaney Bolles had 13 points and 10 boards.  The Warriors finished the game shooting 27.6% from the floor and 18.5% (5-of-27) from long range.

Lourdes (5-13) advances to the semifinals where the Gray Wolves will meet fourth-seeded Concordia (Mich.) for the third time in five days on Saturday afternoon.  Tip-off is set for noon inside of Cardinal Fieldhouse in Ann Arbor, Mich.
