Lourdes bats were hot in game one of Friday's doubleheader against Indiana-South Bend in a 15-4 victory, but the Titans rebounded in game two to defeat the Gray Wolves 8-6 at Mercy Field.
"Our bats came out hot in game one and we were able to put a bunch of runs on the board," head coach
Josh Bradford said afterwards. "In game two, we struggled to control the momentum of the game. We were able to get something going late but it just wasn't enough today."
After surrendering a run in the top of the first of game one, Lourdes bats went to work. The Gray Wolves sent 11 hitters to the plate and scored five times in the opening inning.
Gabe Scott (Curtis, Ohio/Genoa H.S.) had a RBI double to put the Gray Wolves on the scoreboard and
Bryce Gargus (South Haven, Mich./South Haven H.S.) drove in two more later in the inning with a two-bagger.
Lourdes increased the lead to 6-1 in the second as a run scored on a double play before
Jay Denman (Toledo, Ohio/Saint Francis de Sales H.S.) delivered a RBI hit in the third.
The Gray Wolves batted around again in the fourth, sending 10 batters to home plate while scoring seven runs. Denman hit a two-run home run to cap the frame while Scott, Gargus, and
Joey Oehlers (Lambertville, Mich./Bedford H.S.) each delivered run-scoring doubles.
Indiana-South Bend plated two in the fifth and added one final run in the seventh, but the comeback bid fell well short.
Gargus went 4-for-4 with three runs batted in in game one while Denman and Scott each had three hits and three RBI. Oehlers also had a three-hit games as Lourdes banged out 18 hits in game one.
Anderson Strunk (New Baltimore, Mich./Algonac H.S.) earned the win (1-1) on the mound, allowing three runs and six hits in five innings of work. He struck out three and walked two. Matt Lood took the loss (0-2), yielding five runs and four hits while lasting just 0.1 innings.
The Titans built a quick lead in game two and withstood a late Lourdes rally to earn the split. Indiana-South Bend scored two in the first, four in the second, and two more in the third to take an 8-1 lead. Lourdes battled back, scoring four times in the fifth.
Harrison Jackson (Millbury, Ohio/Lake H.S.) hit a three-run home run while another run crossed the plate on a ground out.
In the sixth,
Noah Childress (Toledo, Ohio/Start H.S.) delivered a RBI single to score Denman, closing the gap to two, but the Titans' Kyle Hallberg came out of the bullpen to retire the final four hitters to earn the save.
Childress had the lone multi-hit game for Lourdes in the nightcap as the Gray Wolves managed just six hits.
Bryson Taylor earned the win (1-2), allowing five runs on four hits in five innings on the hill.
Jacob Nastally (Canton, Mich./Salem H.S.) suffered the loss (0-2), surrendering six runs and five hits in 1.2 innings of work.
Lourdes (5-4) and Indiana-South Bend (2-10) will head to South Bend, Ind. on Saturday to complete their four-game series. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. at Rex Weade Stadium.
