Lourdes Sweeps Cincinnati-Clermont in Sunday Baseball

Lourdes bounced back from a three-game losing skid with a doubleheader sweep of Cincinnati-Clermont on Sunday afternoon, defeating the Cougars 4-3 in eight innings and 8-3 at Mercy Field.

The Gray Wolves started quick in the opener, plating a run in the opening inning.  Jay Denman (Toledo, Ohio/Saint Francis de Sales H.S.) led off with a single, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on Noah Childress' (Toledo, Ohio/Start H.S.) sacrifice fly.

After Cincinnati-Clermont evened the game in the top of the third, Lourdes answered with a pair in the bottom half of the inning.  A Bryce Gargus (South Haven, Mich./South Haven H.S.) groundout scored Childress and Brad Ammons (Holland, Ohio/Springfield H.S.) scored one batter later on a Cougar error.

The visitors plated a run in the fifth and tied the game in the sixth, forcing extra innings.  The game remained tied until the bottom of the eighth when Matt McEachern (Burlington, Ont./Hayden Secondary H.S.) singled.  Devin Rooks (Toledo, Ohio/Whitmer H.S.) pinch ran and moved to third on a pinch-hit double by Joey Oehlers (Lambertville, Mich./Bedford H.S.).  After an intentional walk to Josh Hare (Simcoe/Holy Trinity H.S.), the bases were loaded when Zach Woodrum balked home the winning run.

Childress and Denman each had two hits as part of the Gray Wolves' 10-hit attack in the opener.

Braxton McKart (Monroe, Mich./Monroe H.S.) started and worked five innings, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out five while going without a decision.  Harrison Gargus (South Haven, Mich./South Haven H.S.) tossed the final three innings, fanning three, to earn the win (1-0).  Woodrum went the distance for the Cougars in taking the loss (2-1).

After surrendering a run in the top of the first of game two, Lourdes bounced back with a pair in the bottom of the inning, taking advantage of a two-out error by the Cougars.  Cincinnati-Clermont (8-5) retook the lead 3-2 with a pair of runs in the second.

Michael Strzelewicz (Temperance, Mich./Saint Mary's Central Catholic H.S.) led off the bottom of the second with a home run to tie the game before a wild pitch later in the inning plated two more runs.  Denman and Ammons added RBI singles in the third, increasing the Lourdes advantage to 7-3.  A late error in the sixth allowed Lourdes to final its final run.

Strzelewicz went 3-for-4 in game two to lead the Gray Wolf offense, as Lourdes tallied seven hits in the game.

Jagger Geck (Algonac, Mich./Algonac H.S.) worked four innings for the win (1-1), allowing three runs on four hits.  Dominick Ramirez suffered the loss (1-1), giving up seven runs, five earned, in 2.2 innings on the hill.

Lourdes (7-6) will remain home on Tuesday afternoon, hosting Thomas More.  First pitch is set for 3 p.m. at Mercy Field.
