Upcoming in Gray Wolves Volleyball: Lourdes heads into the penultimate week of the regular season in a first place tie with Indiana Tech in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference. The Gray Wolves host Siena Heights on Tuesday evening before taking to the road to battle Goshen on Saturday afternoon.
Head Coach Greg Reitz: In his 10th season both on the Lourdes bench, and overall coaching men's volleyball,
Greg Reitz has a 186-69 (.729) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves. He has earned six conference Coach of the Year honors during his first nine seasons at Lourdes, including the WHAC Coach of the Year in 2018. He is the only head coach in program history.
Series Notes: Lourdes holds a 25-1 all-time series advantage against Siena Heights dating back to Feb. 14, 2012. The Gray Wolves have won four straight meetings between the two schools after downing the Saints in four sets on Feb. 21 in Adrian, Mich. Lourdes is 4-0 against Siena Heights inside the Ebeid Rec Center. The Gray Wolves hold a 3-1 series edge against Goshen dating back to Jan. 22, 2019. Lourdes won this season's first meeting between the two schools on Feb. 5 in straight sets. The Gray Wolves won the only previous meeting in Goshen, Ind. in 2019.
Wrapping Up Last Week (Or Two Weeks Ago): Lourdes cruised to a straight sets victory over Aquinas 25-23, 25-21, 25-10 the last time the Gray Wolves took the court on March 5 at home.
Ricardo Gehrke recorded 17 kills and hit .424 while
Jeff Lam added 15 kills and hit .414.
Ian Fields dished out 40 assists and recorded 13 digs.
Scouting Siena Heights: The Saints have won three consecutive matches after downing 11th-ranked Saint Xavier in four sets on Saturday (March 13) afternoon. Alex Garavalia leads Siena Heights with 149 kills and is hitting .224 while Keegan Crawford has handed out 437 assists. Kevin Gomez has registered a team-high 12 service aces. Defensively, Joudiel Poveymirow has tallied a team-best 186 digs while Jakob Pickett has recorded 35 blocks.
Scouting Goshen: The Maple Leafs are coming off a straight sets win on March 9 against Thomas More and have won three of their last four contests overall. Goshen travels to Siena Heights on Thursday before hosting Lourdes. Alexander Rabadzhiev leads Goshen with 237 kills and is hitting .269 while Michael Wahl has handed out 583 assists. At the service line, Rabadzhiev has 36 service aces. Defensively, Brayton Yoder leads the Maple Leafs with 189 digs while Andy Bennett has tallied 54 blocks.
More WHAC Honors: Lourdes tallied two more WHAC honors following their win against Aquinas.
Ian Fields was named the WHAC Setter of the Week while
Ricardo Gehrke earned WHAC Attacker of the Week accolades. Fields award was his second of the season.
Down the Home Stretch: Lourdes has assured itself a spot in the WHAC tournament that will be held April 2-3 at the site of the regular season champion. The Gray Wolves enter the final four matches tied with Indiana Tech for the top spot in the standings, with the two schools meeting each other for the final time next Tuesday, March 23.
Facing Another Ranked Foe: Lourdes is 2-1 against NAIA Top-15 opponents this season and will face another on Saturday when the Gray Wolves battle 15th-ranked Goshen. Lourdes defeated #13 Goshen and #9 Saint Xavier earlier this season while falling to 10th-ranked Indiana Tech. All-time, the Gray Wolves are 33-54 against NAIA ranked foes.
Leading the NAIA: Jeff Lam leads all NAIA player averaging 0.94 service aces per set this season. The Gray Wolf senior has recorded 29 aces in the 31 sets he has played this year.
Gray Wolves Nation's Top Assist, Dig Team: Lourdes leads the entire NAIA averaging 12.38 assists and 12.54 digs per set this season.
Ian Fields is seventh individually with 9.67 assists per stanza while
Guga Heidrich is third nationally recording 3.86 digs per set.
Setting a New School Record: Jeff Lam set a new program record for service aces earlier this season. He currently has 105 aces after passing his former teammate,
Evan Gebert (2017-2020), who tallied 87 during his four years at Lourdes.
On the Assist Charts: Henrique Gehrke has set the school's career assist mark with 2,548 helpers over his four years. Gehrke has 266 assists more than current assistant coach
Ryan Ferkel (2014-2017), who is second on the list. In addition,
Ian Fields has moved into third on that same list with 1,127 during his time in a Lourdes uniform.
Record Watch: Jeff Lam and
Ricardo Gehrke rank third and fourth respectively in career kills. Lam currently has 888 kills while Gehrke has 758 kills during his stay at Lourdes. Gehrke just surpassed Nick DiMarco's (2012-2013) total of 753. Lam is 114 kills behind second place
Frank Craig (2012-2015), who graduated with 1,002 kills.
This and That: The Gray Wolves are holding the opposition to just .127 hitting on the season ... Lourdes has won 10 straight matches at home in the Ebeid Rec Center and is 32-8 all-time on its home court.
