Game Recap: Baseball |

Another Walk-Off Gives Lourdes Split in WHAC Opener

Noah Childress' (Toledo, Ohio/Start H.S.) two-out single in the bottom of the ninth of game two gave Lourdes a 6-5 victory over Aquinas and a split of Saturday's doubleheader at Mercy Field after the Saints won the opener 6-0.

The walk-off is the third for the Gray Wolves already in this young season.

"It was a great way to bounce back after a loss in the opener," head coach Josh Bradford said afterwards.  "We played had all day and pitched well.  We got some big hits in the end."

Lourdes took the lead in the second inning of game two as Devin Rooks (Toledo, Ohio/Whitmer H.S.) delivered a RBI double and Harrison Jackson (Millbury, Ohio/Lake H.S.) delivered a run-scoring single.

After Aquinas (10-8, 1-1 WHAC) plated three in the top of the third, the Gray Wolves answered in the bottom of the frame.  Gabe Scott (Curtis, Ohio/Genoa H.S.) hit a two-run home run, his first at Lourdes, while Joey Oehlers (Lambertville, Mich./Bedford H.S.) added a run-scoring single to make it 5-3.

The Saints plated one in the fifth and tied the game in the sixth, setting the stage for the late inning dramatics.  In the ninth, Cord Noble (Rockford, Mich./Rockford H.S.) registered a pinch-hit double before Ryan Jagodzinski (Perrysburg, Ohio/Rossford H.S.) pinch ran.  Jay Denman (Toledo, Ohio/Saint Francis de Sales H.S.) was intentionally walked before Childress singled to right with two outs to win the game.

Rooks and Childress both had three hits in the night cap.

Jagger Geck (Algonac, Mich./Algonac H.S.) earned the win (2-1) with four innings of relief, allowing just one run and three hits while striking out three.  Braxton McKart (Monroe, Mich./Monroe H.S.) started and earned a no decision for the Gray Wolves, logging five innings while striking out three.

In game one, Travis Keys threw seven shutout innings, allowing five hits and striking out 11 while Michael Casterline fanned four in two innings of relief for the Saints.

Aquinas scored single runs in the third and fourth before adding two more in the fifth.  The Saints plated two more insurance runs in the ninth.

Rooks had two of the Gray Wolves' five hits in the opener.

Kolby Rogge (Holland, Ohio/Springfield H.S.) allowed three earned runs in eight innings of work while suffering the loss (2-2).

Lourdes (8-8, 1-1) will take to the road for its next four games, beginning on Sunday with a doubleheader against Wright State-Lake.  First pitch in game one is set for 1 p.m. at Montgomery Field in Celina, Ohio.
