Lourdes Sweeps Goshen in Battle of Ranked Foes

In a match between two NAIA top-15 programs, 10th-ranked Lourdes earned a 25-22, 25-21, 25-14 sweep on the road against 15th-ranked Goshen on Saturday inside of Gunden Gymnasium in Goshen, Ind.

"We played a very strong match," head coach Greg Reitz said afterwards.  "Our defense was a bit off in the first set, but we got better with each set.  Our hitting was very efficient for most of the match."

Lourdes hit a blistering .375 for the match, tallying at least a .333 hitting mark in each set.  Jeff Lam (Richmond, B.C./Hugh McRoberts H.S.) put down 15 kills, swinging at a .480 clip, while adding four service aces on the afternoon.

The Gray Wolves jumped out to a quick 6-1 lead in the opening set before the Maple Leafs battled back to take a 13-11 lead.  Lourdes scored six of the next seven points to pull back in front, a lead the Gray Wolves would not relinquish.

A 7-1 run in set two allowed Lourdes to build a 14-8 lead while building a 2-0 advantage in the match.  Goshen pulled to within two, 19-17, late, but was unable to tie the set down the stretch.

In the third, Lourdes hit .409 with just two attack errors while limiting Goshen to a .042 clip.  The Gray Wolves took a quick 13-6 lead before closing the match with the final six points to earn the sweep.

Ian Fields (Phoenix, Ariz./Sandra Day O'Connor H.S.) ran the offense, handing out 34 assists.  Defensively, Guga Heidrich (Braco do Norte, Brazil/Colegio Unificado) had eight digs while Zach Haube (Lincoln Park, Mich./Riverview H.S.) registered six blocks.

Alexander Rabadzhiev led Goshen (13-8, 5-5 WHAC) with 15 kills, hitting .355 while Michael Wahl recorded nine digs and handed out 25 assists.

Lourdes (11-1, 9-1) remains tied atop the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference heading into the final week of the regular season.  The Gray Wolves host Indiana Tech, the team they are tied with, on Tuesday evening inside the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.  First serve is set for 7 p.m.
