Lourdes picked up its first road victory of the season, 14-3, in game one on Tuesday, but Rochester (Mich.) rallied with five runs in the eighth inning of game two to earn a split of the doubleheader, 12-10, at Bill Shinsky Field in Rochester Hills, Mich.
Â
In the openers, Lourdes started quickly, and never let up offensively, scoring multiple runs in four different innings. In the top of the first,
Noah Childress (Toledo, Ohio/Start H.S.) hit a two-run home run to straightway center, putting the Gray Wolves on the scoreboard. After Rochester answered with a homer in the bottom of the inning, Lourdes plated two more in the second as
Jay Denman (Toledo, Ohio/Saint Francis de Sales H.S.) reached on a two-out, three-base error that plated a pair, increasing the lead to 4-1.
Â
Harrison Jackson (Millbury, Ohio/Lake H.S.) hit a solo round-tripper in the fourth, only for the Warriors to tally a run in the bottom of the frame. Lourdes broke the game open in the fifth, sending 11 batters to the plate while scoring seven times.Â
Gabe Scott (Curtis, Ohio/Genoa H.S.) had two hits in the inning, a double and a two-run single, while
Brad Ammons (Holland, Ohio/Springfield H.S.),
Cord Noble (Rockford, Mich./Rockford H.S.), and Jackson each had RBI singles as well.
Â
Lourdes plated a pair of insurance runs in the seventh, with Denman doubling home one and Childress driving home another. Rochester got one run back in the bottom of the seventh, but not enough to extend the game, which ended due to the run rule.
Â
The Gray Wolves pounded out 12 hits in the game, with Jackson going 4-for-4 while also scoring four times. Scott and Childress each had multi-hit games as well.
Â
Braxton McKart (Monroe, Mich./Monroe H.S.) went the distance on the hill to earn his first win (1-0) of the season. He allowed 10 hits and the three runs, striking out eight in the process.
Â
Brandon Evans started and took the loss (0-1) for Rochester, allowing five runs and three hits over the game's first four innings.
Â
Game two started as a pitcher's duel, with the Gray Wolves'
Zach Brown (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.) and Rochester's Nick Bastian combining to allow just one hit over the first four innings.
Â
Both teams broke through in the fifth, taking advantage of the other's error.  Lourdes scored three in the top of the inning, taking advantage of an error, a bunt single by
Corey Righman (Ashville, Ohio/Teays Valley H.S.), two walks, a hit batter, and a wild pitch to score three times. Rochester answered in the bottom of the inning, plating four unearned runs to take the lead, 4-3.
Â
One inning after the Warriors sent 10 batters to the plate, Lourdes had 11 hitters bat. The Gray Wolves took advantage of wildness in the sixth. Four batters were hit in the inning, three of which forced in runs, as Lourdes put up five runs in the frame to build a 7-4 advantage.
Â
Rochester (4-13, 2-3 WHAC) plated three runs in the seventh inning to pull within a run. The Warriors then took advantage of five errors by the Gray Wolves in the bottom of the eighth to score five times, taking the lead for good.
Â
Noble doubled home a run in the top of the ninth and Denman followed with another RBI two-bagger. The Gray Wolves had the tying runs on second and third, but a flyout to the warning track in center ended the game.
Â
Noble was the only Lourdes batter with two hits in game two as the Gray Wolves had just seven total, but also drew four walks and were hit six times.
Â
The Gray Wolf defense committed eight errors in the game, leading to eight unearned runs for the Warriors.
Â
Neither starter figured in the decision, as Charlie Smith earned the win (1-1), allowing just two unearned runs in 3.1 innings of relief.Â
Spencer Rader (Bowling Green, Ohio/Bowling Green H.S.) suffered the loss (0-1).
Â
Lourdes (10-12, 3-3) remains on the road Saturday afternoon, heading to Grand Rapids, Mich. for a doubleheader at Cornerstone. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at DeWitt Stadium.
