Lourdes built early leads in both games of Saturday's doubleheader at Cornerstone, but the Golden Eagles rallied twice to sweep the twinbill from the Gray Wolves 11-10 and 13-9 at DeWitt Stadium in Grand Rapids, Mich.
Â
Harrison Jackson (South Haven, Mich./South Haven H.S.) put the Gray Wolves on top in the opening inning of game one, clearing the bases with a double to left center. After the Golden Eagles answered with three in the bottom of the inning,
Noah Childress (Toledo, Ohio/Start H.S.) put Lourdes back in front with a two-run double in the second.
Â
A
Joey Oehlers (Lambertville, Mich./Bedford H.S.) RBI single in the third pushed the lead to 6-3, only for Cornerstone to respond in the bottom of the third with three runs of their own. Jackson hit a sacrifice fly in the fourth while the Golden Eagles again tied the game 7-7 with a tally in the fifth.
Â
Lourdes plated single runs in the seventh, eighth, and ninth to build a 10-7 advantage heading to the bottom of the ninth.Â
Jay Denman (Toledo, Ohio/Saint Francis de Sales H.S.) singled home a run in the seventh, Childress homered an inning later, and Denman added another RBI single, his fourth hit of the game, to plate an unearned run in the ninth.
Â
Cornerstone rallied in the bottom of the ninth. The Golden Eagles scored four times on four straight two-out hits, the game-winner coming from Landon Poll.
Â
In addition to Denman's four hits, Childress had three as part of a 17-hit attack for the Gray Wolves. Cornerstone banged out 21 hits of their own, including a 5-for-6 effort from Jordan Wenzel.
Â
The Gray Wolves again jumped out to a big lead in game two.Â
Devin Rooks (Toledo, Ohio/Whitmer H.S.) plated the first run with a RBI single while Jackson followed with a two-run double in the opening inning. After Cornerstone responded with a pair in the bottom of the first, Lourdes scored five times in the second to extend the lead to 8-2. Childress singled home a run and
Brad Ammons (Holland, Ohio/Springfield H.S.) drew a bases loaded walk. Rooks singled home two more and Jackson added a sacrifice fly to increase the lead to six.
Â
A Childress sacrifice fly in the fifth gave Lourdes a 9-4 lead, but that would be the final run the Gray Wolves would score on the afternoon. Cornerstone (10-6, 5-1 WHAC) sent 13 batters to the plate in the sixth, scoring seven times, and added two more runs in the eighth to complete the comeback victory.
Â
The Golden Eagles had 16 hits in game two, while Lourdes had 12 hits. Denman registered four doubles in the game while Rooks had three hits.
Â
Lourdes (10-14, 3-5) returns home for 10 straight games beginning on Tuesday as the Gray Wolves welcome Goshen to Mercy Field. First pitch in game one of the doubleheader is set for 2 p.m.
