Concordia Tops Lourdes in Four Sets

Lourdes pulled even with Concordia (Mich.) after two sets on Saturday afternoon, but the Cardinals managed to win sets three and four to defeat the Gray Wolves 25-23, 19-25, 25-13, 25-20 inside of Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.

"This was another tough match for us," head coach Greg Reitz said afterwards.  "We played well at times, but it wasn't enough to win the match.  We have to go back to work to improve for the next time we get to compete."

The Gray Wolves hit just .118 for the match, with Michaela Eisenhauer (Castalia, Ohio/Margaretta H.S.) leading the way with nine kills.

Set one was tight throughout, with 11 ties and six lead changes before the Cardinals scored three straight points when the set was tied at 21 to take control.  Lourdes led from start to finish in set two, jumping out to a 20-8 lead before holding on for the win.

Concordia (5-6, 5-4 WHAC) never trailed in the third and fourth sets.  A 17-6 start by the Cardinals in set three allowed them to pull ahead for good and in the fourth they built a 12-3 advantage and never looked back.

Vanessa Villarreal (Monroe, Mich./Saint Mary Central Catholic H.S.) added eight kills and 13 digs for the Gray Wolves while Alli Plasencio (Toledo, Ohio/Central Catholic H.S.) and Quinn Yondo (Grand Rapids, Mich./Catholic Central H.S.) each had 13 digs as well.

Yasmin Assis (Salto, Brazil/Antonio Alves Aranha H.S.) handed out a team-high 24 assists and tallied 10 digs.

Kaitlin Veihl hit .375 to lead Concordia while putting down 14 kills.  Tara Schatzle recorded a match-high 24 digs for the Cardinals.

Lourdes (3-8, 3-7) will close out its homestand on Friday evening, hosting Rochester (Mich.).  First serve is set for 7 p.m. inside the Ebeid Rec Center.
