Aquinas picked up a walk-off victory, 9-8, in game one of Thursday's non-conference doubleheader but Lourdes rebounded with a 9-5 victory in game two at the WMSC Sports Complex in Rockford, Mich.
Lourdes jumped in front early in the opener, scoring four times in the top of the second, three of which were unearned.
Brad Ammons (Holland, Ohio/Springfield H.S.) scored the game's first run on a passed ball before a fielder's choice off the bat of
Ryan Jagodzinski (Perrysburg, Ohio/Rossford H.S.) plated a second run. A two-out error allowed two more runs to score in the frame.
After Aquinas answered with three in the bottom of the second, Lourdes rebuilt its lead with a two-run double by Jagodzinski in the third to make it 6-3 Gray Wolves. The Saints wasted little time responding though, tying the game with three more runs in the bottom of the inning.
Aquinas took the lead with a run in the fourth and added a tally in the sixth before the Gray Wolves rallied in the seventh.
Devin Rooks (Toledo, Ohio/Whitmer H.S.) singled home a run and a groundout by
Michael Strzelewicz (Temperance, Mich./Saint Mary's Catholic Central H.S.) tied the game at eight.
The Saints won the game in the bottom of the seventh with a hit batter, a sacrifice bunt, and a bunt single.
In game two, Lourdes plated two in the second and three in the third before a four-run outburst in the fourth. The Gray Wolves had five straight hits, capped by a two-run double from
Joey Oehlers (Lambertville, Mich./Bedford H.S.). Lourdes tacked on two more runs in the fifth to build a 9-1 lead.
Aquinas (20-19) rallied with four runs in the sixth but would not get any closer.
Corey Righman (Ashville, Ohio/Teays Valley H.S.) had three hits while Oehlers and
Jay Denman (Toledo, Ohio/Saint Francis de Sales H.S.) added two each.
No other game two details were available late Thursday night.
Lourdes (15-21) returns home for Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference action on Friday as the Gray Wolves host Madonna. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m. at Mercy Field.
