Lourdes closed out the home portion of the 2021 schedule on Sunday with Senior Day, but Concordia (Mich.) spoiled the celebration defeating the Gray Wolves in both ends of the doubleheader 10-4 and 7-1 at Mercy Field.
In the opener, the Cardinals started fast, taking advantage of a Lourdes first inning error to score two runs. Concordia added to the lead with a single run in the fourth and two more unearned tallies in the fifth to build a 5-0 advantage.
After managing just two hits through the first six innings, Lourdes broke through in the seventh. After back-to-back two out walks,
Cord Noble (Rockford, Mich./Rockford H.S.) put the Gray Wolves on the scoreboard with a single up the middle to score
Devin Rooks (Toledo, Ohio/Whitmer H.S.).
Concordia answered with four more runs in the eighth to pull away and added another tally in the ninth.
Lourdes plated a run in the eighth as well as
Brad Ammons (Holland, Ohio/Springfield H.S.) singled home
Ryan Jagodzinski (Perrysburg, Ohio/Rossford H.S.), who led off the inning with a double. In the ninth,
Joey Oehlers (Lambertville, Mich./Bedford H.S.) walked with the bases loaded to force home
Corey Righman (Ashville, Ohio/Teays Valley H.S.) and
Jay Denman (Toledo, Ohio/Saint Francis de Sales H.S.) hit a sacrifice fly to plate Noble.
Grant Steinborn went eight innings to earn the win (6-2) for Concordia, allowing just five hits and two runs while walking four and striking out two.
Anderson Strunk (New Baltimore, Mich./Algonac H.S.) suffered the loss (2-4). He went seven innings, allowing five runs, only one of which was earned, and 10 hits.
In game two, Concordia (33-13, 15-3 WHAC) took the lead with a pair of runs in the third, one of which was unearned following two of the Gray Wolves five errors in the game.
Noah Childress (Toledo, Ohio/Start H.S.) accounted for Lourdes' lone run in the fourth. After Tyson Kleinfelter retired the first 10 Gray Wolves of the game, Childress hit his 11
th home run of the season to right.
The Cardinals would tack on single runs in the fifth and seventh before adding three more unearned runs, all with two outs, in the eighth.
Lourdes managed just five hits against Kleinfelter in his complete game win (7-0), as he walked just two and struck out eight.
Bryn Biemiller (Newmarket, Ont./Bill Crothers Secondary H.S.) started and took the loss (1-1), allowing just one earned run and three hits in four innings of work.
Lourdes (15-25, 5-13) takes to the road on Tuesday afternoon to make-up a non-conference doubleheader at Huntington. First pitch in game one is set for 3 p.m. at Forest Glen Park in Huntington, Ind.
