Baseball Has Record-Setting Day in Sweep of Goshen

Lourdes scored 40 runs and pounded out 37 on Tuesday afternoon, as the Gray Wolves swept Goshen 13-9 and 27-1 at Mercy Field.

The Gray Wolves had to rally with eight runs in the bottom of the sixth in the opener before scoring a school-record 27 times in game two, including 20 runs in the first three innings.

Lourdes fell behind 7-2 midway through the opener before Josh Hare (Simcoe, Ont./Holy Trinity H.S.) hit his first collegiate home run, a two-run shot with two outs in in the bottom of the fourth.  Gabe Scott (Curtis, Ohio/Genoa H.S.) followed three batters later with a RBI single and the Gray Wolves were within two.

Goshen added what appeared to be a pair of insurance runs in the top of the ninth, building a 9-5 lead, before Lourdes sent 12 batters to the plate in the bottom of the inning, rallying with eight runs.   Noah Childress' (Toledo, Ohio/Start H.S.) second double of the game tied the contest before Devin Rooks (Toledo, Ohio/Whitmer H.S.) put Lourdes in front with a double of his own.  A wild pitch made it 11-9 before Bryce Gargus (South Haven, Mich./South Haven H.S.) drove home the final two runs with a single.

Gargus went 3-for-4 in the game as part of a 13-hit attack while Childress finished with three runs batted in.

Spencer Rader (Bowling Green, Ohio/Bowling Green H.S.), who came on in relief in the fourth inning, pitched 2.1 innings, allowing just two runs and four hits to earn the win (1-1), his first collegiate triumph.

In game two, the Lourdes bats stayed hot, as the Gray Wolves scored nine times in the opening inning and added seven more in the second.  A two-run single by Rooks and a three-run triple by Jay Denman (Toledo, Ohio/Saint Francis de Sales H.S.) highlighted a first inning in which Lourdes sent 14 batters to the plate.  The Gray Wolves had 11 more hitters bat in the second.  Max Peyton (Elyria, Ohio/Elyria H.S.) drive home two with a double before Childress delivered a three-run home run to straightaway center.  Harrison Jackson (Millbury, Ohio/Lake H.S.) went back-to-back with a solo shot, making it 16-1.

Childress hit another three-run home run in the third before being lifted for the game after going 4-for-4 with a double, two round-trippers, and six RBI, giving him nine runs batted in on the day.

Lourdes plated a run in the fifth before adding six more in their final at bat in the bottom of the sixth.  Corey Righman (Ashville, Ohio/Teays Valley H.S.) hit his first career home run, a three-run blast, as the Gray Wolves batted around for the third time in the game, sending 10 hitters to the plate.

Lourdes had 24 hits in the game, led by Childress' four-hit effort.  Peyton, Hare, and Zack Mon (Columbus, Ohio/Westland H.S.) all had three hits.  Denman had four RBI while scoring three times.

Anderson Strunk (New Baltimore, Mich./Algonac H.S.) earned the win (2-2) on the mound, allowing just one unearned run and four hits in four innings of work while striking out three.

Lourdes (12-14) remains at home on Friday afternoon, as the Gray Wolves host Michigan-Dearborn.  First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 3 p.m. at Mercy Field.
