Lourdes jumped in front early in game one of Friday's doubleheader with Michigan-Dearborn on the way to a 12-5 win, but the Wolverines got a strong pitching performance in game two to split the twinbill with a 5-2 victory at Mercy Field.
The Gray Wolves sent 12 batters to the plate in the opening inning of game one, scoring seven times.
Harrison Jackson (Millbury, Ohio/Lake H.S.),
Devin Rooks (Toledo, Ohio/Whitmer H.S.), and
Brad Ammons (Holland, Ohio/Springfield H.S.) each had RBI singles before
Joey Oehlers (Lambertville, Mich./Bedford H.S.) delivered a two-run double.
Bryce Gargus (South Haven, Mich./South Haven H.S.) added a run-scoring hit and
Jay Denman (Toledo, Ohio/Saint Francis de Sales H.S.) lifted a sacrifice fly to make it 7-0 Gray Wolves.
Michigan-Dearborn got on the scoreboard in the third, scoring three times, only for the Gray Wolves to extend their lead in the fourth. Rooks had a sacrifice fly and Ammons doubled home a run to push the lead to 9-3. After the Wolverines plated one in the top of the fifth, Denman launched a home run to answer in the bottom of the frame.
Denman went deep for the second time in as many at bats in the seventh inning, this time, a two-run blast. Michigan-Dearborn scored one final run in the eighth to close out the scoring.
Jackson had a three-hit game while Denman had four RBI as Lourdes pounded out 14 hits in the opener.
Harrison Gargus (South Haven, Mich./South Haven H.S.) earned the win (2-0) with 2.2 innings of scoreless relief, allowing just three hits while striking out four. John Dyda took the loss (1-2), allowing seven runs and eight hits in three innings on the hill.
In game two, Tyler Koons tossed seven shutout innings, scattering just five hits while striking out eight to earn the win (1-1) for Michigan-Dearborn (3-7, 3-5 WHAC).
The Wolverines scored three runs in the fourth on four straight hits to take the lead. Two more runs scored in the seventh, one unearned, as the advantage grew to five.
The Gray Wolves finally broke through in the eighth as Rooks drew a bases loaded walk and Ammons was hit by a pitch one bater later, but Lourdes stranded the bases loaded. The Gray Wolves again brought the tying run to the plate with one out in the ninth but could not score.
Ammons finished the game with two of the Gray Wolves' six hits.
Jagger Geck (Algonac, Mich./Algonac H.S.) started and suffered the loss (3-2), allowing three runs, two earned, and six hits in five innings while fanning four.
Lourdes 13-15, 4-6) will remain home on Tuesday afternoon as the Gray Wolves host Saint Francis (Ind.). First pitch in game one of the doubleheader is set for 3 p.m.
