Lourdes Aces First Place Cornerstone

Lourdes served up 11 aces on Friday evening on the way to handing Cornerstone its first Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference loss of the season with a 25-23, 25-22, 8-25, 25-23 win over the Golden Eagles inside the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.

The Gray Wolves hit just .104 against Cornerstone, which entered the match tied for first place in the WHAC, but also took advantage of 11 reception errors by the Golden Eagles.

"This was a great win for us," head coach Greg Reitz said afterwards.  "We played just well enough to win.  We were able to feed off of our electric crowd, and they helped us get some points when we really needed them."

Cammy Smith (Mansfield, Ohio/Ontario H.S.) hit .346 with 13 kills while Macey Zinser (Bucyrus, Ohio/Wynford H.S.) added 11 more.  Kylee McBride (Peoria, Ariz./Mountain Ridge H.S.) and Katey Stakolich (Parma, Ohio/Normandy H.S.) both registered double-doubles.  McBride had 10 kills and 18 digs while Stakolich handed out 36 assists and picked up 13 digs.

Defensively, Alli Plasencio (Toledo, Ohio/Central Catholic H.S.) notched 26 digs and Vanessa Villarreal (Monroe, Mich./Saint Mary Central Catholic H.S.) added 15 more.  Smith was involved in all three Lourdes blocks on the night.

The opening set had 11 ties and five lead changes, with Lourdes taking the lead for good with three straight points after the set was tied at 13.  That started a 10-3 Gray Wolf run that put the hosts in front 23-17.  Cornerstone closed to within one, 24-23, with a late 7-1 run of its own, but a Villarreal kill ended the set.

Trailing 7-6 in the second set, Villarreal, who had four aces along with Abby Gentile (Blissfield, Mich./Blissfield H.S.), served up six straight points as Lourdes used a 10-2 run on the way to taking a 2-0 lead in the match.

The third set was all Cornerstone (9-9, 4-1 WHAC).  Lourdes managed just three kills while hitting -.128 and the Golden Eagles used a 14-2 run to extend the match.

In the fourth, Lourdes jumped out to a 6-1 lead only to see Cornerstone use a 6-1 spurt to pull back in front 14-12.  The set was tied at 21 before Lourdes managed to score the next two points to take the lead for good and pull off the upset.

Kaylee Dykema led Cornerstone with 17 kills and hit .469 while Olivia Keelean added 14 kills and 21 digs.

Lourdes (4-7, 2-4) takes to the road on Wednesday evening as the Gray Wolves head to Southfield, Mich. to battle Lawrence Tech.  First serve is set for 7 p.m. inside the Don Ridler Fieldhouse.
