Behind
Farouk Amoo's (South Holland, Ill./Thornwood H.S.) second hat trick of the season, Lourdes opened Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play with a 4-2 victory over Siena Heights on Saturday evening at O'Laughlin Stadium in Adrian, Mich.
"Any time we can take three points from a conference game we are happy," head coach
Matt Johnson said after the win. "Siena Heights is a really good team. We've talked a little about the importance of set pieces, so getting three goals on them was great to see. I thought we could have managed the game a little better once we got ahead of them in the second half, but I'm happy to have a road win and be 1-0 in the WHAC."
The Gray Wolves wasted little time getting on the scoreboard as Amoo headed in a corner from
Leon Eisert (Leipzig, Germany/Kathe-Kollwitz Gymnasium) just 1:22 into the contest to put Lourdes in front.
The Saints' Gustavo Barros tied the match with 16:50 to play before intermission as his shot beat
Igor Silva (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Pentagono) in the lower left corner of the goal.
Lourdes finished the opening 45 minutes with an 11-7 shot advantage.
Amoo put the Gray Wolves in front 2-1 just 6:14 out of the break, scoring on another corner, this one taken by
Savio Adams (Cape Town, Africa/Zeekoevlei). Amoo scored a goal of his own just under four minutes later, curling a free kick around the Siena Heights wall from 27 yards out, pushing the lead to 3-1.
The Saints cut the lead in half with 29:16 to play in regulation. Alex Hanosh sent a free kick into the box where Wilhem Weissheimer found the ball bouncing around and sent it into the net.
Siena Heights (3-2, 0-1 WHAC) was forced to play a man down following a red card with 14:15 to play in the second half. The match saw a total of eight cards.
Amoo completed his hat trick with 50 seconds remaining as
Amin Elbashir (London, England/The Crest Boys Academy) drew the assist. He now has nine goals on the season and eight over his last three contests. He has now matched Judah Goodridge (2015-2017) for second in program history with 19 career goals.
The Gray Wolves finished the match with an 18-12 shot advantage. Silva made one stop in net while Matt LeBlanc had four saves for Siena Heights.
Lourdes (6-2, 1-0) remains on the road Wednesday afternoon as the Gray Wolves head to Indiana Tech. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. at Warrior Athletic Field in Fort Wayne, Ind.
