Lourdes led ninth-ranked Indiana Tech at the half on Wednesday afternoon, but the Warriors scored four times in the final 45 minutes to defeat the Gray Wolves 4-1 at Warrior Athletic Field in Fort Wayne, Ind.
"Good teams punish mistakes, and we made a few too many in the second half," head coach
Matt Johnson said after the match. "There's a reason Indiana Tech is ranked in the top-10 in the country. They are so good on the ball and with their movement. We were probably a bit too open defensively and their execution was quite good when the moment was there."
The Gray Wolves struck quickly as
Diego Pereira (Asuncion, Paraguay/Cristo Rey) beat his defender and sent a cross to
Farouk Amoo (South Holland, Ill./Thornwood H.S.), who scored his second goal of the season just 9:45 into the contest.
Lourdes maintained the one-goal lead into intermission, allowing the Warriors just one shot attempt which came in the closing moments of the opening half.
Indiana Tech (8-1, 2-0) responded quickly out of halftime. Maxwell Amoako scored a pair of goals just 3:01 apart to put the Warriors in font 2-1 with 37:39 to play. Antonio Marra added an unassisted goal in the 73
rd minute before Markos Fameliaris closed out the scoring, finding the back of the net with just under 10 minutes remaining.
Indiana Tech finished the match with an 11-7 shot advantage, including a 5-4 edge on net.
Igor Silva (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Pentagono) made one save in goal for the Gray Wolves while Jaume Salvado made three stops in just over 81 minutes of action for the Warriors.
"We have to learn from this one quickly because it's a hungry Dearborn team that we will see at home on Saturday," Johnson concluded.
Lourdes (6-3, 1-1) returns to Wildcat Stadium on Saturday afternoon as the Gray Wolves host the University of Michigan-Dearborn. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
