A goal with 4:32 remaining in regulation proved to be the difference on Saturday evening as Georgetown (Ky.) handed Lourdes its first loss of the 2021 season, defeating the Gray Wolves 1-0 at Toyota Stadium in Georgetown, Ky.
Alessandro Carnicelli sent a cross through the box to Jake McKettrick, who headed the ball into the net for what proved to be the lone goal of the match.
"There are no excuses for us tonight," head coach
Matt Johnson said after the match. "Georgetown had a good game plan, outworked us, and deserved to win. Credit them for a really well-played game."
Georgetown (3-0) held a 10-8 shot advantage at halftime before the Gray Wolves finished with a 17-16 edge for the match. The Tigers goalkeeper Theren Handlon made eight saves in goal to earn the shutout, including five stops over the final 45 minutes.
Igor Silva (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Pentagono) made four saves between the posts for Lourdes.
"We changed a few things in the second half that helped us gain a foothold, but in the end, it wasn't enough," Johnson said. "We have to find a way to recover our legs to play with a little more jump at Holy Cross this week if we're going to have a chance in that one."
Lourdes (3-1) concludes its season-opening five-match road trip on Tuesday evening, traveling to Notre Dame, Ind. to face Holy Cross (Ind.). Kickoff is set for 4:30 p.m. at Saints Field.
