In a match that changed locations after the start due to a weather delay, Holy Cross (Ind.) scored less than a minute into the second half to earn a 2-1 victory over Lourdes at Saints Field and TCU School Field in Notre Dame, Ind.
Â
"We had lots of things for us to deal with tonight," head coach
Matt Johnson said afterwards. "We were a little shorthanded, had a delayed start time, and the game was moved due to the weather. We started a little flat, but found ourselves as the game went on."
Â
Holy Cross (3-1) struck quickly as Juan Perez scored just 9:34 into the match with Cliff Brown drawing the assist. Following the goal, the match was delayed due to storms in the area.
Â
The match moved locations to resume under the lights and Lourdes found the equalizer midway through the first half.Â
Diego Pereira (Asuncion, Paraguay/Cristo Rey) received the ball in space near midfield. He drove forward on the dribble and slipped a pass to
Hussein Sbeiti (Dearborn, Mich./Dearborn H.S.) behind the defense. Sbeiti tucked the ball away for his fourth goal of the season.
Â
The match remained deadlocked into halftime despite the Saints holding a 7-3 advantage in shots over the opening 45 minutes.
Â
Just 41 seconds out of the break, Brown fired a shot from distance that deflected off a Gray Wolf defender into the goal for what proved to be the match-winner.
Â
Lourdes had a chance late, as Holy Cross was forced to play a man down for the final 20 minutes due to a red card, but was unable to find the equalizer.
Â
Both teams had five shot attempts in the second half with Holy Cross finishing the match with a 12-8 advantage.
Â
"Credit our guys for pushing for the equalizer right to the end, but Holy Cross is well-coached and managed the game really well late with the lead. It was tough for us to create many clear chances against their back line."
Â
Igor Silva (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Pentagono) made three saves in goal for Lourdes while Claudio Fuentealba made two stops for the Saints.
Â
Lourdes (3-2) will return to Wildcat Stadium on Saturday afternoon for its home opener against Point Park. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m.
