Lourdes hung with Aquinas for three quarters on Wednesday evening, but the Saints outscored the Gray Wolves 24-10 in the final period to earn a 70-54 victory inside the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.
The Gray Wolves had four players finish in double figures, led by
Logan Ingram's (Mount Pleasant, Mich./Mount Pleasant H.S.) 14 points and five assists.
Mercedes Wagner (Sherwood, Ohio/Fairview H.S.) added 12 points while
Shallyn Miley (Bryan, Ohio/Bryan H.S.) added 11 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
Shae Pedroza (Napoleon, Ohio/Napoleon H.S.) chipped in 10 points as well.
"I was happy with how we started tonight," head coach
Tandy Bradford said afterwards. "We have to complete four quarters of play to beat an experienced team like Aquinas though."
Lourdes started fast, taking an early 9-3 lead less than four minutes into the contest. The Saints answered with seven straight points over the next two minutes to pull in front for the first time, but the Gray Wolves were able to regain a one-point advantage after 10 minutes.
With Lourdes holding a 16-12 lead early in the second, Aquinas scored eight of the next 10 points to build its largest lead of the first half with under four minutes to play before intermission. The Gray Wolves responded in the closing minutes of the stanza though and used a late 11-2 run to take a 29-26 lead into halftime.
The Gray Wolf lead was five, 38-33, midway through the third before Aquinas went on an 11-2 spurt of its own to retake the lead. Lourdes scored the final four points of the period though to close to within 46-44 heading into the fourth.
Aquinas shot 57.1% from the floor in the fourth quarter though and held the Gray Wolves to just 4-of-17 shooting over the final 10 minutes to pull away. The Saints led by just four, 56-52, with five minutes to play before closing the game on a 14-2 run to secure the win.
Marissa Brady led Aquinas (12-9, 7-4 WHAC) with 19 points and 16 rebounds while Mauriya Barnes came off the bench to add 14 points. The Saints finished the game shooting 46.6% from the field, including 8-of-20 (40%) from three-point range to overcome 20 turnovers.
Lourdes shot 35.9% from the floor but was just 4-of-21 (19%) from long range. The Gray Wolves committed just 13 turnovers though while registering 14 steals.
Lourdes (7-13, 1-10) continues its five-game homestand on Saturday afternoon as the Gray Wolves host Lawrence Tech. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. inside the Ebeid Rec Center.
